Congratulations to Georgia's newest Save America's Treasures grant recipient!
Central of Georgia's Gray Building, Savannah College of Art and Design, Savannah. The 1856 Gray Building is the oldest surviving railroad office building in the nation and a centerpiece of the Central of Georgia Railroad National Historic Landmark, the nation's only intact antebellum railroad complex. A failing roof and damaged exterior masonry have led to serious water damage over time. These problems will be addressed with this grant. Award: $290,000.
Save America's Treasures Grants totaling $14.89 million are being awarded to 61 projects in 29 states and the District of Columbia. By law, each award requires a dollar-for-dollar non-Federal match. States, localities, corporations, foundations, and individuals who value America's heritage have pledged support for these important projects through financial contributions and in-kind services. Georgia Historic Landscape Initiative news
The Georgia Historic Landscape Initiative (GLHI) is a collaborative effort of the Garden Club of Georgia, Historic Preservation Division (HPD), the Cherokee Garden Library, and the Southeast Regional Office of the National Park Service. In response to the Historic American Landscapes Survey (HALS) program created by the National Park Service in 2000, several professionals in Georgia created the GHLI project in 2002 to document Georgia's historic gardens and landscapes. The idea was to revisit the 160 plus gardens documented in the 1933 publication Garden History of Georgia 1733-1933. They use Garden Club of Georgia volunteers to survey the gardens originally documented in Garden History of Georgia, plus any other significant gardens that we know about or come across. To date, 57 gardens have been surveyed. We have received a
Fellowship through the Cherokee Garden Library, to be funded for 2006 by the Garden Club of Georgia. For further information, can contact Susan_Hitchcock@nps.gov, Landscape Historian, National Park Service, 404562-3117 x 605 or

Reminder: HPD wants your input through public forums and online survey
The Historic Preservation Division (HPD) of the Department of Natural Resources, Georgia's State Historic Preservation Office, has begun the process of updating the state historic preservation plan. The plan establishes the priorities and policies to guide the Division's preservation efforts for the next five years (2006-11).
As part of the planning process, we'd like your input in our online survey. Go to our Web site, www.gashpo.org and click on the link: Attention-give us your input for a new state plan! A print version of the survey will be mailed out in September. Be one of the first to fill it out!
In addition, HPD will be holding two public forums to solicit input to help set goals and priorities and to develop a plan that will be effective and useful to the Division, the preservation community and stakeholders who use the Division's services. The forums will provide information about HPD's programs and services and about the historic preservation planning process and will allow for public input on various preservation issues.
