Fort Hawkins archaeological dig
Fort Hawkins was a U.S. Army post established in 1806 and abandoned by 1828. During its two decade existence, the fort served as Army Headquarters for two wars (Creek War/War of 1812, 1813-1815, and the 1st Seminole War 18171818). Fort Hawkins also served as the primary Indian Factory, or warehouse for trade goods and supplies that were distributed by the U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs to the Southern tribes. The Fort Hawkins site is located in the Fort Hill Historic District of Macon, Georgia and can be accessed via Woolfolk Street.
The LAMAR Institute begins the first phase of excavation of Fort Hawkins on Wednesday November 9, 2005. The public is invited to visit the excavation beginning Sunday November 12. Site tours are scheduled for 10AM and 2PM on all days. The excavation will continue through Wednesday November 23, 2005. A second season of excavation is currently planned for the last two weeks of June 2006. This large-scale excavation promises to open up many new vistas about life on the Georgia-Creek Nation frontier and early 19th century military life. For more information and to schedule visits by large groups, contact the LAMAR Institute by email at danelliott@aol.com or by phone at (706) 341-7796.
The LAMAR Institute is seeking volunteers for the period of November 12-23. This archaeological excavation project is being conducted to National standards of methods and ethics. These ethical standards are outlined by Code of Conduct of the Register of Professional Archaeologists (http://www.rpanet.org/). All artifacts discovered by the project remain the property of the City of Macon, Georgia. Volunteers should only be on Fort Hawkins archaeological site property when authorized representatives of the LAMAR Institute are present. For an application and more information, please contact Dan Elliott at Danelliott@aol.com.
