May is Historic Preservation Month!
On May 6, Governor Sonny Perdue will officially proclaim May as Historic Preservation Month in Georgia. This year's theme, Historic Preservation Makes Heritage Tourism Possible, highlights preservation's importance to Georgia's second largest industry, tourism.
Historic Preservation Month events will take place in communities across Georgia. Check the Events Calendar at www.gashpo.org for activities near you.
The Historic Preservation Division will hold its ninth annual Preservation Achievement Awards presentation in conjunction with the National Register Review Board meeting on May 13 in Atlanta. Recognition is given to people and organizations throughout the state that have made significant contributions to protecting Georgia's historic and archaeological resources. This year's recipients will be announced in next week's newsletter.

Savannah house museum wins Preserve America Presidential Award
Isaiah Davenport House Museum in Savannah received one of four 2005 Preserve America Presidential Awards presented at a White House ceremony recently. In the Heritage Tourism category, the two winners were: Restoration of The Mount: Lenox, Massachusetts and the Texas Heritage Trails Program. In the Privately Funded Preservation category, the two winners were: Bolduc Historic Properties--Operational Enhancement: Sainte Genevieve, Missouri and the Isaiah Davenport House Museum: Savannah, Georgia.
The Isaiah Davenport House Museum, dating from the 1820s, is an extremely significant heritage resource for Savannah and Georgia, but the structure

additionally is important as an icon of the American historic preservation movement itself. It is cited as the initial project that spurred Savannah's preservation ethic and created the Historic Savannah Foundation in 1955 during the initial struggle to save the irreplaceable structure from demolition. This effort ultimately resulted in the preservation of the 1733 city plan and hundreds of structures now encompassed in a National Historic Landmark District.

French-American Foundation seeks applicants for preservation study tour/exchange program
The French-American Foundation sponsors an annual reciprocal study tour/exchange program for cultural professionals in partnership with the French Ministry of Culture and Communications. The aim of this exchange program is to foster dialogue between Americans and French professionals on cultural policy issues and engage a reflection on best practices in both countries. Their topic for 2005 is historic preservation.
Eight French professionals in the field of historic preservation visited three U.S. cities -- Washington, DC, Charleston, SC, and New York -- in April 2005. They are now seeking candidates for the reciprocal study tour to France scheduled to take place in September 2005. Candidates could include government officials with responsibility for historic preservation, directors and curators of historical sites, academics in the field, and senior officials in non-profit organizations that deal with historic preservation. Interested parties should send their resume and a letter of interest explaining how this tour can be beneficial to them and the organization they represent by June 3, 2005 to: Emma Archer, Director of Cultural and Social Programs, French-American Foundation, 28 West 44th Street, Suite 1420 New York, New York 10036; phone 212-829-8800 Ext. 13; fax 212-829-8810; www.frenchamerican.org
