GAPC names Gwendolyn Fortson Waring as newest board member
The Georgia Alliance of Preservation Commissions (GAPC) is pleased to welcome Gwendolyn Fortson Waring of Savannah to its Board of Directors. At the recent GAPC Historic Preservation Commission training in Decatur, Gwendolyn was nominated from the floor and unanimously approved. She is filling the position vacated by Lee Webb, formerly of Savannah, who has taken a preservation planner position with the City of Alexandria, VA. Current Board members accepting a second two-year term include: Regina Brewer (Atlanta), Monica Callahan (Madison), Dianne Davidson (West Point), Beth English (Vienna), Ken Kocher (Monticello), Mark Petermann (Tifton), James Reap (Athens), Evelyn Reece (Athens) and Sybil Willingham (Taylor County).
Gwendolyn is a graduate of Princeton University and she received her JD from Georgia State University College of Law in 1992. An attorney, she is currently serving a second term on the Savannah Historic District Board of Review as the Parliamentarian. She is a past Chair of that Review Board; and she also serves as Vice President for the Historic Savannah Foundation. From 2002-2004 she served on the Board of the National Alliance of Preservation Commissions (NAPC). In addition, she serves on other boards which reflect her love of art and African-American history including the Telfair Museum of Art, the King-Tisdell Cottage Foundation Board, and as the Chair of the Negro Heritage Trail Tour TM an historic tour of Savannah's African American journey.
The GAPC Board of Directors is composed of fifteen members, one from each of nine regions (a combination of Regional Development Center boundaries) and six at large from within the state. Members of the Board of Directors and Officers must be current or past members of preservation commissions or serving as staff to a preservation commission. For more information on the GAPC, please visit www.uga.edu/gapc.

Call for nominations: 2006 Governor's Awards in the Humanities
The Georgia Humanities Council invites you to nominate individuals or organizations for the 2006 Governor's Awards in the Humanities. Think about those that have had great impact on your community or our state through work in humanities education: master teachers who enrich learning experiences within and outside of the classroom; or the volunteers or staff for cultural organizations who research and present important stories or keep the doors of institutions open. Every community has in its midst these heroes, who through their recognition of the importance of the humanities, enrich civic life at the local level. Letters of nomination must be postmarked by January 27, 2006. For more information about the event or how to make a nomination visit http://www.georgiahumanities.org/programs/gov/index.html.

Grants
The National Park Service's National Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) Program invites proposals for FY2006 NAGPRA grants. NAGPRA is the 1990 federal law that provides a process for museums and federal agencies to return certain Native American cultural items human remains, funerary objects, sacred objects, and objects of cultural patrimony - to lineal descendants, culturally affiliated Indian tribes, and Native Hawaiian organizations. The National NAGPRA Program administers grants that can assist Indian tribes, Alaska Native villages, and corporations, Native Hawaiian organizations, and museums in carrying out projects associated with NAGPRA compliance. Two types of grants are available. Deadline for final proposals is March 1, 2006 (draft proposals are accepted through December 30, 2005). Information and applications are online. http://www.cr.nps.gov/nagpra/grants
Governor Sonny Perdue recently announced the availability of challenge grants to communities wishing to implement the "Hands On" model of volunteer recruitment and management. Communities who receive challenge grants will receive a total of $100,000 in state funding, to be equally matched by locallyraised funds. DCA has partnered with Hands On Georgia to distribute the grant funds to local governments that partner with community agencies to use volunteers to transform communities and engage citizens in service. Georgians interested in applying for a Hands On Georgia-DCA Challenge Grant can download the application from the Hands On Georgia website at www.handsongeorgia.org. For more information, please contact Kim Goff at info@handsongeorgia.org or 404-979-2910.
