Holiday season help for historic homeowners in New Orleans
As the holidays approach, homeowners are unpacking lights and decorations to adorn their homes and yards. In New Orleans, returning homeowners are clearing out debris and inspecting damaged roofs. Indeed, in this hurricaneravaged city, the most sought after holiday decoration is a simple blue tarp.
The National Trust and the Preservation Resource Center's Rebuilding Together have launched Team Tarp, a program that provides returning homeowners with free tarps. Why are tarps so critical? Thousands of New Orleans' historic neighborhood homes are structurally sound, but sustained wind and flood damage. Many historic homes in New Orleans do not meet government criteria to receive free tarps. Repairs for many homeowners may be modest now, but if damaged roofs remain uncovered, more rain will cause repair bills to rise dramatically and even render some homes uninhabitable. With waits for home repair contractors stretching for weeks if not months, the threat of losing homes that have been in their families for generations is very real.
