Georgia's Historic Schools context study is online
Public Elementary and Secondary Schools in Georgia, 1868-1971 is a historic context that supports the evaluation and nomination to the National Register of public elementary and secondary schools in Georgia.
The historic context begins with the Second Constitutional Convention, which authorized state financing for a system of public schools in 1868, and ends with the completion of racial integration of public schools in Georgia in 1971. The context identifies four basic school types: the rural public school, the urban public school, the consolidated public school, and the early modern public school. These schools represent some of most significant community landmark buildings in rural areas, towns, suburbs, and cities across Georgia.
The historic context is written in the form of a multiple property nomination that provides registration requirements for potential National Register nominations and determinations of eligibility for Section 106 compliance. Future National Register nominations for individual schools will need to include information specific to the school being nominated. This historic context need only be referenced, thereby saving the preparer time and effort. For further information, contact the Survey and National Register Unit of the Historic Preservation Division at 404-651-5911.

UGA Metropolitan Design Studio to provide new tools for managing growth in Newton County
The University of Georgia has announced the opening of the UGA Metropolitan Design Studio located in the Raphael building in Clark's Grove (www.clarksgrove.com) and a community design charrette sponsored by the Metropolitan Design Studio, the Newton County Board of Commissioners and The Center, a nonprofit group located in Covington at 2104 Washington Street (www.thecenter-newton.org). The charrette will focus on developing a comprehensive land use and community building plan for the Oak Hill community.
The Metropolitan Design Studio evolved over three years of collaboration between UGA's College of Environment and Design and The Center. The goal of the studio is to bring together county residents, elected officials and the business community with UGA students to produce creative solutions to manage growth and development. The studio will be an off-campus learning center for UGA students in landscape architecture, historic preservation and ecology. Approximately 10-15 students will live and work at the studio for one semester while solving real world problems related to urbanism and growth.
