Grants
Conservation Assessment Program (CAP) provides funds for small to mid-sized museums to hire professional conservators to assess the condition of their collections and make recommendations for improvement. For museums with buildings more than 50 years old, the CAP grant also provides funds for a preservation architect. Grants range between $4430 to $7890 depending on the museum's budget and number of assessors. For many museums, CAP is the first step toward improving collections care. The FY 2005 CAP application will be mailed October 8, 2004, and will be accepted until the postmark deadline of December 1, 2004. Funds are awarded on a first-come, firstserved basis to museums that meet IMLS eligibility requirements. Applications will be

sent only to institutions that have requested to be on the mailing list. To receive an application, contact Kate Marks at kmarks@heritagepreservation.org or 202-223-0831. The FY 2005 CAP application may also be downloaded at http://www.heritagepreservation.org/PROGRAMS/CAPhome.HTM. Until October 8, the FY 2004 application is available to help museums prepare for the application process. Congratulations to the McDaniel-Tichenor House in Monroe on its 2004 CAP grant.
The National Park Service's American Battlefield Protection Program (ABPP) invites federal agencies, tribal, state, and local governments, educational institutions, and nonprofit historical preservation and other private sector organizations to submit applications for battlefield preservation grants. Proposed projects must lead directly to the identification, preservation, and interpretation of battlefield land and/or historic sites associated with battlefields. In recent years grants have averaged about $32,300 per award. Applications must be received by January 28, 2005. More information and applications are online at http://www2.cr.nps.gov/abpp/2005grants.htm
HPD received an 2004 ABPP grant to identify the submerged cultural resources associated with the Civil War naval operations on the Ogeechee River through a combination of archival research, underwater archeology, remote sensing, and systematic diver evaluation and mapping. With the advent of ironclad warfare in 1862, the Ogeechee River became the scene of many significant battles involving ironclads and sand forts and batteries.
