Flint River Basin Archaeological Survey
Archaeologists with the LAMAR Research Institute will host Booth 59 in the Georgia Building at the Georgia National Fair at Perry from October 8-17. The purpose of the outreach effort is to publicize the Flint River Basin Archaeological Survey (FRBAS). The
FRBAS, sponsored by the Department of Natural Resources, Historic Preservation Division (HPD), is a joint effort of professional archaeologists and relic collectors that explores, documents, preserves and interprets the archaeological resources of the Flint River watershed. This long-term research plan teams traditional archaeological survey methods, relic collector surveys, and cooperative agreements with the region's landowners to accomplish its goals. The project has resulted in the location of 475 previously unrecorded archaeological sites, and more than 100 artifact collectors have participated in the innovative project. The FRBAS booth at the 2004 fair is another method for linking Georgia's public with its exciting archaeological past. For more information about FRBAS and archaeology in Georgia, please visit HPD's Web site at www.gashpo.org or contact the Office of the State Archaeologist at 404-657-1367.

The 118th offering in its Teaching with Historic Places series, The Forced Relocation of the Cherokee Nation looks at both the 1,000-mile journey that killed 4,000 Cherokees and the conflict within the Cherokee Nation as it struggled to hold on to its land and its culture. http://www.cr.nps.gov/nr/twhp/wwwlps/lessons/118trail/118trail.htm
