Miss Freedom is back on top
The 115-year-old copper statue was lowered onto her perch atop the Gold Dome of the state Capitol (on November 6). The Capitol matriarch was airlifted from the dome in July, packed up and taken to Canada because she was showing signs of a failing finish. The Toronto company which won the bid for the restoration stripped the paint down to the statue's copper core and repaired several pin-size holes in the sheet metal that forms her skin. Workers applied a fresh coat of white paint and inserted an internal armature to make her more stable, doubling her 800 pounds. The restoration was the first since 1958 and cost $235,000, Pereira said. It was done as the one of the final installments in an $86 million Capitol renovation. The scaffolding that surrounds the 22foot-tall structure will remain in place at least until the beginning of the year. Workers still have to regild the cupola as part of the Capitol building renovation project.
The statue of the female figure clasping a sword in her left hand and a lighted torch in her right was installed in 1889 and commemorates Georgia's war dead. The statue's origins are unclear because no one has been able find the original documents. An often-repeated story is that the statue was designed for the Ohio state Capitol, but Ohio legislators couldn't afford it. So the Toledo contractors who built Georgia's Capitol hauled the monument South and planted her atop the building in Atlanta.

Coming full circle, the Augusta Canal Authority's Master Plan earned the Georgia Planning Association's Award for Outstanding Planning Project ten years ago, in 1994.
