HABS documentation completed on Cumberland Island tabby building

The Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS) announces the completion of a project documenting the Playhouse at the Stafford Plantation on Cumberland Island. This oneroom house was constructed in 1820 on the plantation of Robert Stafford Jr., Cumberland's largest landowner by the mid-nineteenth century. The Playhouse is a rare surviving example of tabby construction unique to the coastal southeast. The HABS documentation will be used in the preservation and restoration of this building. AASLH and NCSHPO want your stories
In March 2004, the National Conference of State Historic Preservation Officers (NCSHPO) took part in a meeting to explore the possibility of federal formula grants in support of history - for organizations that care for the documents and artifacts that comprise our nation's cultural heritage. The American Association for State and Local History (AASLH) is heading up this effort. The AASLH is now trying to solicit moving stories about how a few dollars has made a huge difference -- to people, to communities, etc. -- to exemplify the need for more dollars. The AASLH would like to have an example or two with respect to historic preservation, so if you have a story to contribute, please send it to Ms. Terry Davis at davis@aaslh.org.
