Preserve Georgia is the theme for historic preservation month
Governor Sonny Perdue will officially proclaim May as Georgia Historic Preservation Month in a ceremony on May 18. This year's theme, Preserve Georgia, celebrates our state's diverse history and resources and how historic preservation helps save that heritage.
HPD will hold its eighth annual Preservation Achievement Awards presentation in conjunction with the National Register Review Board meeting on May 21 in Atlanta. Recognition is given to people and organizations throughout the state who have made significant contributions to protecting Georgia's historic and archaeological resources.
Preservation-related events will take place in communities across Georgia. HPD's Web site is a great source for special event listings. Go to at www.gashpo.org and check the Events Calendar for historic preservation month activities near you. May is also Georgia Archaeology Awareness Month. Visit the Society for Georgia Archaeology Web site at www.georgia-archaeology.org/sga to learn how you can get involved in archaeology.

Federal transportation grants awarded
Cities and counties throughout (Georgia) have been awarded transportation enhancement grants to build or improve trails, sidewalks, greenways, streetscapes and historic transportation-related facilities. The grants are federal transportation dollars that the state Department of Transportation has to spend. Local governments must apply for grants and provide matching money to pay for 20 percent of the projects. The program's goal is to diversify transportation and livability in Georgia by paying for nonroad projects such as sidewalks. The DOT received 338 applications from local governments for the $52 million to be distributed in Georgia in 2004. From the applications, the DOT chose 127. For more information about Transportation Enhancement (TE) projects, visit the Georgia DOT Web site at http://www.dot.state.ga.us/dot/plan-prog/planning/projects/te/index.shtml.
