HPD presents 2004 Preservation Achievement awards
The Historic Preservation Division (HPD) of the Georgia Department of Natural
Resources presented its 8th annual Preservation Achievement Awards on May 21
following a National Register Review Board meeting in Atlanta. The award recipients
are being recognized for their contributions while working in conjunction with HPD and
its programs. These individuals and organizations were nominated by division staff
members and are recognized as having helped further HPD's mission, vision, and
goals, and thereby made a significant contribution to historic preservation in Georgia.
This year's recipients are:
Michael Miller, Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia, for
promoting the importance of the stewardship of historic buildings on Georgia's state
university and college campuses.
Anne Floyd, Central Savannah River Area Regional Development Center, for her
outstanding work as a regional historic preservation planner over the past 16 years.
Tom Gresham, Georgia Council on Indian Concerns and Southeastern
Archaeological Services, for his selfless contributions to the promotion of Georgia
archaeology over the past two decades.
Monica Callahan, City of Madison, for her successful integration of historic
preservation ethics into all levels of city government as Madison's planning director.
Cynthia Rosers, African American Alliance of the Newnan-Coweta County
Historical Society, for her commitment to the preservation of Coweta County's African
American historic resources.
Hope Moorer and Randy Weitman, Georgia Ports Authority, for their sensitivity to
the archaeological mitigation work at the Mary Musgrove site, the future home of GPA's
Container Berth 8, near Savannah.
Andrea MacDonald, South Georgia Regional Development Center, for her
outstanding work documenting historic schools in Georgia.

Georgia's Historic House and Garden Pilgrimage
Sponsored by the Garden Club of Georgia, Inc. and the Historic Preservation Division, will be held in Covington on Saturday, June 5. This year's theme is "Sherman's March through Covington/Newton County." Tickets are $20 and can be purchased on the day of the tour at Covington's Welcome Center/Chamber of Commerce. The tour runs from 9:30 5:00. Proceeds from the tour will go towards the Garden Club's Historic Landscape and Garden Grant program. NEH Preservation and access research and development grants
Grants are given to support research and development projects that advance the nation`s capacity to preserve and provide access to humanities resources. Eligible activities include projects that would: develop technical standards and best practices for preserving and providing access to collections; devise more effective physical methods of preserving collections; develop new or improved procedures for the creation of reference works; and address issues involving the policies and practices of humanities research institutions that affect preservation and access on a national level. Positions available in Georgia
Archaeology: field technician for 3-4 days in Macon, GA area. Must have experience operating hand auger and be able to write up accurate soil descriptions. Greatest consideration will be given to professionals with Southeastern experience. The work will involve "augering" wooded uplands of low probability for arch. sites, and possibly assisting with some shovel testing or mapping. Transportation to work site from hotel is provided.
