Shields-Ethridge Heritage Farm founder passes away
Mrs. Joyce Ethridge passed away on May 6, 2004 at age 91. According to Burke Walker, preservation planner with the Northeast Georgia Regional Development Center, "She was the founder of the Shields-Ethridge Heritage Farm Foundation, Inc. and visionary behind its reuse as an outdoor agricultural museum. She was a devoted preservationist in her hometown of Jefferson and Jackson County and was recognized by the Georgia Trust in 1996 for her commitment to Stewardship. The Shields-Ethridge Heritage Farm has received two Georgia Heritage Grant awards and a Preservation Services Fund (PSF) grant for the National Trust for Historic Preservation."
Jane Cassady, project manager with the Athens-Clarke Heritage Foundation said, "Joyce was so dedicated to historic preservation and education, that she will be really missed. Her daughter, Susan Chaisson and her family, will continue Joyce's mission to share the history of agriculture to educate the public."
Listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1992, the Shields-Ethridge Farm will hold their annual "Mule Day" on May 22. For more information, visit their Web site at www.shieldsethridgefarm.org.
