News from the Little White House
DNR's Parks and Historic Sites division has recently completed conservation on a circa 1880 Concord coach that belonged to President Franklin D. Roosevelt. The coach was used by the Meriwether Inn to ferry guests back and forth to the train station and "came
along with" the Meriwether Inn, when FDR purchased the hotel. The coach is one of 151 known to exist in the world and was made by the Abbott-Downing company out of Concord, Connecticut, who also made the same style of coach for the Wells Fargo company. Interpretive supervisor Debbie L. Wallsmith, Ph.D., explains, "we have had the leather thoroughbraces (the "suspension" for the coach) tightened and cleaned and now International Fine Arts Conservation Studios (IFACS) is working on the exterior paint. IFACS is charged with the awesome task of consolidating the paintwork on the coach and making it look more like it did when FDR owned it by undoing some of the work done during a 1949 restoration project." The coach will be on exhibit in the new Little White House museum beginning April 12. Visit their Web site at www.fdrlittlewhitehouse.org/.
