HPD staff news
Serena Bellew, HPD's environmental review coordinator for the past four years, will be leaving our office at the end of this month. She will be the cultural resources specialist for the Installation Management Agency-Army Reserve Division. Her main responsibilities will be to make sure that the Army Reserve facilities around the country are carrying out their Section 106 and Section 110 responsibilities under the National Historic Preservation Act, and providing technical assistance and training to Army Reserve cultural resources staff. We will certainly miss Serena here at HPD, and wish her the best in her new position!

Public Archeology Timeline Online
Major events in public archeology between 1784-2004 are highlighted in a new National Park Service online feature: Public Archeology in the United States: A Timeline. The website splits the years covered into six sections, each of which notes key events and offers links and bibliographies. http://www.cr.nps.gov/aad/timeline/timeline.htm

Nominations sought
Nominations for the American Association for State and Local History (AASLH) 2005 Awards Program are due by March 1, 2005. AASLH recognizes
achievement in the preservation of local, state, and regional history. Awards are given for general excellence, exhibits, public programming, special projects, media/publications, individual achievement, and preservation or restoration projects. NTHP seeks nominations for 2005 11 Most Endangered Historic Places List This list is used to identify and raise awareness of historic sites at risk from neglect, deterioration, lack of maintenance, insufficient funds, inappropriate development, or insensitive public policy. To ensure that the most threatened sites are chosen, use the following three primary criteria: significance, urgency, and potential solutions. Southeast Society of Architectural Historians 2005 Publication Awards - These awards are given for publications either on the topic of architecture in the South or by authors who reside in the South. The three categories are books, journal articles and essays published in a book format. The copyright should be no earlier than 2003. A book, article or essay may have no more than two authors and nominated authors must be living. Book titles must also include full bibliographical information so that they can be ordered from the publishers. Deadline: June 1, 2005. Calls for papers/ session proposals
The editors of Future Anterior: Journal of Historic Preservation History seek contributions on any subject, but encourage submissions on the following subjects: Mobility/Transience, Landscape/Growth, and Decay/Soiling. Articles should be no more than 2,500 words, with up to five illustrations. Text must be formatted in accordance with the Chicago Manual of Style, 14th Edition. Spelling should follow American convention, and quotations must be translated into English. All submissions must be submitted electronically, on a CD or disk, accompanied by hard copies of text and images. Deadline: February 27, 2005. The American Society of Landscape Architects is seeking education sessions proposal for its 2005 Annual Meeting & EXPO in Ft. Lauderdale, October 7-11. The ASLA is interested in advanced-level sessions on a number of suggested topics, including natural and cultural resources; residential design; practice management and business; parks and recreation; ADA; "green" issues such as green roofs, wetland mitigation, and brownfield reclamation; water issues;

The 2005 American Studies Association meeting theme is "Groundwork: Space and Place in American Cultures." The ASA Program Committee invites papers and panels that explore embodied spaces, inscribed spaces, contested spaces, gendered spaces, and transnational spaces; that examine the material and cultural manifestations of such favorite American Studies metaphors as centers and margins, borders and crossroads; and illuminate the ways space and place have shaped identities, communities, and power relationships, and enforced inequalities of race, class, gender, sexuality, and physical ability. Fellowships
American Antiquarian Society Visiting Academic Fellowships for 2005-06 - At least three AAS-National Endowment for the Humanities fellowships will be awarded for periods extending from four to twelve months. Long-term fellowships are intended for scholars beyond the doctorate, for which senior and mid-career scholars are particularly encouraged to apply. The short-term grants are available for scholars holding the Ph.D. and for doctoral candidates engaged in dissertation research. Special short-term fellowships support scholars working in the history of the book in American culture, in the American eighteenth century, and in American literary studies, as well as in studies that draw upon the Society's preeminent collections of graphic arts, newspapers, and periodicals.
