HPD Environmental Review Program Coordinator position available
Office Programs: State Historic Preservation Office; activities include survey, evaluation, planning, and technical assistance for the preservation of historic, architectural and archaeological resources.
Duties: Under the supervision of the Planning and Local Assistance Unit Manager, the Environmental Review Program Coordinator is responsible for environmental review of all federally funded or licensed projects in the State of Georgia, in accordance with Sections 106 and 110 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, as amended, Executive Order 11593, and 36 CFR Part 800, and for review of other projects subject to state law (Georgia Environmental Policy Act (GEPA) and the State Agency Historic Property Stewardship Program). The Coordinator develops programs, policies and procedures, coordinates the review work of the Environmental Review team, represents the program to federal and state agencies and their applicants, and participates in conferences, workshops and planning team meetings. As part of this coordination, the Coordinator works with other agencies and other HPD staff, as appropriate, to determine the effects of projects on historic properties and to develop mitigation measures and alternatives to minimize effects.
Skills: Knowledge of cultural resources protection and management principles, including applicable state and federal laws and regulations. Demonstrated ability to assess effects on identified properties, develop alternatives and make recommendations to reduce, avoid or mitigate effects. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing and skills in negotiation.
Qualifications: Completion of an undergraduate degree in planning, historic preservation, architectural history, history, or related field, AND two years of professional experience in historic preservation activities. NOTE: Preference will be given to applicants with a Masters degree in any of the disciplines listed under qualifications and with experience in Section 106 environmental review.
Rate of Pay: Annual salary- $33,533 (entry level) - $60,487 plus fringe benefits (annual/sick leave, health insurance, retirement). Full-time non-merit position. Selected applicant can expect to be hired at or close to the entry-level salary.

Paid part-time, 3-month internship available at The Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation to help coordinate new program that seeks to recognize and rectify the plight of endangered buildings. This intern will help coordinate the nomination and identification process and also work to successfully market the program. Flexible hours. Qualifications: Should be highly organized and self-motivated. Must have excellent writing skills and be familiar with architectural and historic preservation terminology. Marketing, public relations or journalism background and knowledge of AP style preferred. Should know Microsoft Word, PowerPoint & Photoshop and have good communication and people skills. Internship Jekyll Island Museum. Application due date: March 16, 2005. Salary range: $2,560 stipend for 8 weeks plus housing. Web address: www.jekyllisland.com The internship's objective is to expose a limited number of students to the process of site administration and historic preservation within a National Historic Landmark District. Multi-disciplinary approaches will be emphasized and hands-on learning will be given highest priority. Nationally recognized preservation and museum professionals will supervise interns. Education and Training: Following a national, competitive-based application process, four participants in historic preservation and two in museum studies will be accepted into a eight-week internship program. Participants will be admitted based on academic background and achievement, and a genuine interest in museum and restoration processes. Program Requirements: The interns will provide a final project report and a presentation for Museum Staff and the FOHJI membership. Dates: 8-week duration over Summer Season. Stipend: $2,560 plus housing. Credit: Prearranged course credit is the responsibility of any student and his or her institution of learning. Archaeological Field Technician - Fort Stewart, Georgia Must be self-motivated with ability to work independently both in the office and field. Experience working on military installations preferred, but not required. Work is on-site at the installation and may involve phase I and II fieldwork, lab analysis, GIS, and curation duties. Involves Phase I, small-scale surveys in
support of forestry projects. Work is for at least a year, with the possibility of renewal for additional work. Position requires relocation to the area. No per diem. Education Requirements * Archaeology degree with field experience, computer (Arc View) and lab skills, (prehistoric). Individual must have the physical ability to work outdoors in extreme temperature, lift up to fifty pounds and walk and climb in remote areas.
