Historic preservation makes heritage tourism possible
HPD was recently asked to write an article about historic preservation and heritage tourism for the Focus on Tourism newsletter produced by Georgia Tech's Economic Development Institute Tourism and Regional Assistance Centers (TRACS). The article, entitled Historic preservation makes heritage tourism possible by HPD's director Ray Luce, highlights the role historic preservation services and programs play in developing heritage tourism across Georgia. http://www.edi.gatech.edu/FocusonTour/Focus_pdfs/FoT%20Summer%2004.pdf
TRACS has multiple partners with a common mission to provide innovative economic development assistance focused on tourism-related issues to Georgia's communities. Visit their Web site at http://www.ceds.gatech.edu/tracs/index.cfm?Fuseaction=tracs_main.

Georgia has 3 new Preserve America Communities

The following Georgia communities have recently been designated as Preserve America Communities: Richmond Hill, Roswell, and Washington. Designation provides national recognition that a community protects and celebrates its heritage; uses its historic assets for economic development and community revitalization; and encourages people to experience and appreciate local historic resources through education and heritage tourism programs. Communities designated through the program receive national recognition for their efforts. Other benefits include use of the Preserve America logo on signs and promotional materials; notification to media, State tourism offices, and visitor bureaus; and listing in a Web-based directory to showcase preservation efforts and highlight heritage tourism destinations. For more information about the Preserve America program, go to www.preserveamerica.gov.

WMW accepting nominations for 2006 seriously endangered sites list
The World Monuments Watch (WMW) is a global program that identifies and helps preserve the world's endangered cultural heritage by focusing worldwide attention and financial and technical resources on it. Every two years, nomination forms are distributed to government agencies, non-governmental organizations, and professionals around the world. WMF relies on professionals in the field to submit, or encourage others to submit, nominations for seriously endangered sites. The continued success of the program lies directly in the quality of the sites and projects nominated and the participation, professionalism, diversity, and creativity of the site nominators and sponsors. The deadline for the 2006 list is December 1, 2004. http://www.wmf.org/html/programs/participate.html
