Georgia's Historic Courthouses
The Association County Commissioners of Georgia (ACCG) announces the televised showing of "Temples of Justice: Historic Courthouses of Georgia" on Tuesday, August 31st at 7:00 pm on GPTV (statewide). This one-hour documentary explores the role of county courthouses in Georgia's development. ACCG Director Jerry Griffin, who served as executive producer of the project, ensured that every county courthouse in the state received recognition. Visit http://www.starsville.net/previews.html for more information about the production of this program.
Produced in 1992, The Georgia Courthouse Manual was the result of a cooperative effort between the ACCG, the Georgia Department of Community Affairs (DCA), and the Historic Preservation Division (HPD) of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources. Having assisted several counties with courthouse rehabilitation projects, these organizations decided to produce a manual that could be helpful to other counties considering improvements to their own courthouses. The manual is now available on HPD's Web site at http://www.gashpo.org/content/displaynavigation.asp?TopCategory=21
Later this year, HPD will complete a new publication about courthouse rehabilitation.

Share your town's preservation history
In 1974, a court decision loomed regarding the fate of Grand Central Station in New York, but in Columbus Georgia, "The Folly," a flamboyant, neo-gothic double-octagonal home was being named a National Landmark. What was happening in your town? Comb you files, rifle the archives, and google your local newspaper -- Preservation Action is collecting newspaper clippings and assorted ephemera from its founding year 1974. They will make your 1974 stories part of a memory book to be shared at the Advocacy Lunch/30th Birthday Party in Louisville, Thursday, September 30, 12:00 noon - 1:30 pm. Send them in any format to: mail@preservationaction.org; fax: 202.298.6180; or Preservation Action, 1054 31st NW, Suite 526, Washington, DC 20007. NEH's We the People initiative grants
As part of the We the People initiative, the National Endowment for the Humanities seeks proposals for public programs that use one or more historic sites to address themes and issues central to American history. Projects may interpret a single historic site, a series of sites, whole neighborhoods, communities or towns, or larger geographical regions. The place taken as a whole must be significant to American history and the project must convey its importance to visitors. The projects should: increase the public's knowledge and appreciation of American history; encourage historic sites, communities, or regions to develop interpretive programs that address central themes and issues in American history; encourage consultation with humanities scholars and organizations in the development of heritage tourism destinations and itineraries; and focus on the development or implementation of interpretive content that

tells a significant national story appropriate to the place. Possible activities include docent tours, publications (e.g., brochures, guidebooks, etc.), driving or walking trails or tours, annotated itineraries, exhibition labeling or trail signage, films, and digital media. Visit http://www.neh.gov/wtp/grants/index.html to apply for a grant.
