Margaret Mitchell House & Museum merging with the Atlanta History Center
The AHC will assume operation of the MMH&M effective August 1. The consolidation enhances the visibility of the two institutions and creates a new focus on Southern history and culture. It also acknowledges the ties between the Mitchell family and the History Center that date back 75 years. Eugene Mitchell, Margaret Mitchell's father, was a founder of the AHS in 1926 and served as its second board chairman. After Gone With the Wind was published in 1936, Margaret Mitchell joined the AHS board. Her brother, Stephens Mitchell also served as board chairman of AHS in 1956. Additionally, the AHS was located in midtown near the MMH&M until 1966 when it acquired the 1928 Swan House mansion and moved its headquarters to its present site in Buckhead. The merger reunites the AHC with its midtown roots.
"This is a perfect fit for both organizations," said Jim Bruns, president and CEO of the AHC. "The consolidation of the MMH&M as a midtown campus of the Atlanta History Center provides significant operational efficiencies and a much broader audience reach, as well as providing better service to Atlanta. We believe that this consolidation makes sense because of the opportunities to combine the expertise of the respective staffs and reduce operating costs; as well as enhance capabilities for expanding the programming outreach of both organizations."
