HISTORIC CHATTAHOOCHEE COMMISSION GEORGIA NEWS
The Historic Chattahoochee Commission (HCC) has included three Georgia properties on its 2003 Chattahoochee Valley Threatened Landmarks List: Grimsley House in Fort Gaines; the Old Mule Barn in Cuthbert; and Lynch Log House in Lumpkin.
The Thomas M. Kirbo and Irene B. Kirbo Charitable Trust were recognized at the HCC's 21st annual Achievement Awards presentation for their support of heritage tourism projects and programs in the Chattahoochee Valley of Georgia and Alabama.

Five organizations in Georgia received 2003 HCC Seed Grants to assist in the funding and development of heritage tourism projects in the Chattahoochee Valley: Westville Historic Handicrafts Inc. of Lumpkin to mark historic cemetery locations; the City of West Point to produce a self-guided walking and driving tour brochure; the Stewart County Historical Commission for building repairs at the Dr. Hatchett's Drug Store Museum in Lumpkin; the Randolph County Historical Society, Inc. for their annual "Yearbook Days" project; and the Decatur County Historical Society for restoration planning for a World War II airplane hangar.

PRESERVE AMERICA COMMUNITY DESIGNATIONS AND PRESIDENTIAL AWARDS
The Preserve America initiative announced by First Lady Laura Bush earlier this year is inviting applications from towns and cities for Preserve America community designation. A community qualifies if it supported within the last three years a historic or cultural preservation project that promotes heritage tourism or otherwise fosters economic vitality. The project must have involved a public-private partnership between government entities and at least one civic association, non-profit organization, or business enterprise.
The program also is calling for nominations for Preserve America Presidential Awards. The awards will honor organizations, businesses, government entities, and individuals for accomplishments and commitment to the protection and interpretation of America's cultural heritage assets, and innovative and responsible approaches to showcasing historic resources. The program will make four awards this year. Award nominations are due January 15, 2004.
More information about the programs and copies of the applications for the community designation and presidential awards is available from the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation, 202-606-8505 or www.preserveamerica.gov
