HPD STAFF NEWS
We are very pleased to announce that Cherie Bennett, former grants coordinator, has joined HPD's Planning and Local Assistance Unit as community planning coordinator. She can be reached at the same number, 404-651-5181 or at cherie_bennett@dnr.state.ga.us.
Kenneth H. Thomas, Jr., HPD historian, received an Award for Advocacy at the first ever awards ceremony held by the Georgia Historical Records Advisory Board (GHRAB) on October 30 at the Georgia Archives. GHRAB celebrated its tenth anniversary by honoring individuals and institutions that have contributed towards records preservation over the past decade. Thomas was specifically cited for his role at HPD and in writing his genealogy column in advocating the continued preservation of local records, their access to patrons, and their use in research.
Congratulations Cherie and Ken!

SAVING HISTORIC SCHOOLS

HPD's newest publication, Preserving Georgia's Historic Schools, is now available on our Web site. The publication is the first in what we hope to be a series of informative booklets produced by HPD that will focus on the preservation, rehabilitation, and continued use of specific historic building-types in Georgia.
Preserving Georgia's Historic Schools encourages the continued use of these historic resources as educational facilities, rather than their total abandonment in favor of newly constructed buildings. The booklet explains the Georgia Department of Education's policies on funding the rehabilitation of historic schools and discusses issues involved with rehabilitating and updating these historic buildings for the 21st century. It encourages school boards to consider the benefits of using both historic and new buildings as they plan for future growth. Examples and case studies of vacated schools that have been adapted for other contemporary uses are also cited. If you have any questions regarding the publication or would like to receive a hard copy, please contact Cherie Bennett at 404-651-5181 or cherie_bennett@dnr.state.ga.us
The South Georgia Regional Development Center's historic preservation planner, Andrea MacDonald, accepted the 2003 Georgia Planning Association (GPA) award for Outstanding Historic Preservation Project for the Historic Rural Schools Initiative. The award was presented by the 2002-2003 GPA President, Gary Cornell, last week at GPA's annual fall conference in Savannah.
Phase I of the Historic Rural Schools Initiative was to identify and document the region's historic school buildings and to educate local governments on the significance of these buildings as a means to achieve greater awareness of historic resources within the region. In Phase I, a total of 91 historic school buildings (approximately 50 years or older) were surveyed in the nine-county region.
Phase II includes the preparation of a statewide Multiple Property National Register nomination for historic school buildings. The South Georgia RDC, in partnership with HPD, is developing a context study to enable all of Georgia's historic schools to be listed in the National Register of Historic Places. You may contact Andrea L. MacDonald at 229-333-5277 or amacdonald@sgrdc.com.
