HPD'S 7TH ANNUAL PRESERVATION ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS PRESENTED
The Historic Preservation Division (HPD) will present its 7th annual Preservation Achievement Awards on May 9 following a National Register Review Board meeting in Atlanta. The honorees are being recognized for their contributions while working in conjunction with HPD and its programs. These individuals and organizations were nominated by division staff members and are recognized as having helped further HPD's mission, vision, and goals, and thereby made a significant contribution to historic preservation in Georgia.
Congratulations to this year's recipients:
Bill and Gwen Gazaway, organizers of the Roseland Cemetery Volunteers Association, Inc., for their outstanding efforts to restore and protect this abandoned East Point cemetery.
Terry Jackson and Jack Tyler, Department of Community Affairs, for insuring that historic preservation and archaeology form an integral part of local communities' comprehensive planning.
Charles Kelly, Society for Georgia Archaeology LaGrange Chapter, for advocacy and creating Georgia's first avocational underwater archaeology project.
Virginia Pope, Douglas County Tourism and History Commission; and Elizabeth McClendon, community development director, City of Douglasville; for their grassroots effort to save the Old Douglas County Courthouse and publicize its architectural significance.
Robert Price, real estate consultant, for his work with the Georgia Civil War Commission to acquire 105 acres containing Civil War earthworks to be preserved as greenspace by the City of Atlanta.

Ray and Associates (Bamby Z. Ray, Principal; and preservation consultants: Cynthia E. Dolder, Marion Ellis, and Lynn M. Speno), preservation consulting firm, for their exemplary work documenting numerous historic properties across Georgia.
Linda Wilkes, manager of Research and Redevelopment Services for the Georgia Cities Foundation program of the Georgia Municipal Association, for her promotion of historic preservation as a vital component of economic development across Georgia and for her active participation on the Georgia African American Historic Preservation Network's steering committee.

SFY2004 GEORGIA HERITAGE GRANT APPLICATIONS AVAILABLE The SFY 2004 Georgia Heritage Grant applications have been mailed out this week and are also available on HPD's Web site. Applications are due back to HPD by July 11, 2003. A free grant-writing workshop is scheduled for June 4, 2003, in Macon at the Middle Georgia RDC. This workshop is designed to prepare grant-seekers who are planning to submit a Georgia Heritage grant application this year. Registration for this workshop must be made to Cherie Bennett at 404-651-5181 by May 27th. Please contact Mrs. Bennett if you need assistance in preparing your application or have questions about the Georgia Heritage Program.
Eligible activities include development activities such as stabilization, preservation, rehabilitation and restoration and predevelopment activities, such as the preparation of plans and specifications, feasibility studies, historic structure reports, and other building-specific or sitespecific preservation plans. Historic and archaeological resources seeking funding assistance must be listed in, or eligible for listing in, the Georgia Register of Historic Places. The maximum grant amount that can be requested for individual development projects is $40,000 with a minimum of $5,000 and the maximum grant amount for individual predevelopment projects is $20,000 with a minimum of $2,000.

Reynoldstown Historic District, roughly bounded by the CSX rail line, Memorial Dr., Pearl St., and Moreland Avenue, Atlanta, Fulton County, was listed in the National Register of Historic Places on April 3, 2003.
During April 2003, 2000 contributing properties in Georgia were added to the National Register: . NEA'S CHALLENGE AMERICA GRANTS
The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) Challenge America Grants are meant to broaden efforts to provide Americans opportunities to experience the excellence and diversity of the arts. This grant is awarded to projects that do one or more of the following: provide opportunities for people to experience and participate in a wide range of art forms and activities; enable arts organizations and artists to expand and diversify their audiences; emphasize the potential of the arts to help strengthen communities.
