AUGUSTA CANAL INTERPRETIVE CENTER OPENING EVENTS ANNOUNCED
The Augusta Canal is the nation's only industrial power canal still in use for its original purposes. Built in 1845 to harness the water and power of the Savannah River, the Augusta Canal now affords its visitors history, recreation and unique experiences along its 8.5 miles of towpath and waterway. The Augusta Canal is the only designated National Heritage Area in Georgia, and one of only 23 in the country.
Dedication ceremonies for the Augusta Canal National Heritage Area Interpretive Center are set for 5-7 p.m. Thursday, April 17. The Interpretive Center will officially open its doors to the public the following day, April 18 at 10 a.m. In addition to the private dedication event on the 17th, the Interpretive Center will waive admissions fees on Saturday, April 26 for a community get-acquainted day. The $3 million Interpretive Center is housed in Enterprise Mill, one of the Canal's huge 19th century former textile mills. Developed in partnership with the National Park Service, the Interpretive Center's 10,000 square feet of interactive exhibits take visitors from the Canal's initial conception and construction in the 1840s and expansion in the 1870's, through its role in the Civil War and its aftermath to the New South industrial growth and electrification of the city. www.augustacanal.com
