PRESERVE AMERICA: EXECUTIVE ORDER LAUNCHES NEW PRESERVATION INITIATIVE
On March 3, 2003, President George W. Bush signed Executive Order 13287 authorizing the creation of a Preserve America program initiated by the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation. The order directs federal agencies to inventory and promote greater use of historical sites in partnership with state, tribal, and local governments. These efforts will be carried out through preservation partnerships, agency planning and accountability, and improving stewardship. In addition, assistance will be given to promote the use of historic properties for heritage tourism and related economic development.
In undertaking this initiative, each agency will be responsible for preparing an assessment of the status of its historic property inventory no later than September 30, 2004. By September 30, 2005 (and every third year thereafter), each agency will prepare a report on its progress in identifying, protecting, and using historic properties. No later than June 30, 2003, a senior policy level official will be designated by each agency that will oversee responsibility for the agency's historic preservation program. For text of the Executive Order visit http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2003/03/20030304-9.html
