GLEN MARY PLANATION NAMED AN ENDANGERED LANDSCAPE
Scenic America has included Glen Mary Plantation on its list of 10 "Last Chance Landscapes" for 2002-2003. The 26-acre Glen Mary Plantation, built around 1848 on a commanding hilltop, is located seven miles south of Sparta n Hancock County. Views from Glen Mary's columned front porch remain as rural as they were in 1850. In 1973 Glen Mary Plantation was listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and subsequently the White House Millennium Council selected Glen Mary Plantation as a National Treasure. Scenic America states, "The glorious views from Glen Mary's front porch will disappear if commercial logging already underway on land directly facing Glen Mary Plantation continues. America's second largest private timberland owner began clear-cutting in the spring of 2002. If the clear-cutting progresses Glen Mary's view shed and historic cultural landscape will be destroyed. Another threat is encroaching residential sprawl as well as the increased traffic on scenic rural roadways that are negatively impacting Glen Mary's historical and cultural context. Of all new home sites in Hancock County, 75% are sold for mobile homes that have fragmented the landscape into small parcels." Visit Scenic America's Web site www.scenic.org/2002lcl/glenmary.html for more information.

AHC LAUNCHES NEW ONLINE CURRICULUM RESOURCES
The Atlanta History Center (AHC) has just launched a Curriculum Resources section on their Web site. Now readily available to any online user, but of particular interest to teachers, the educational guide is free and easy to navigate. Each section has lesson ideas and activities that can be adapted for most grades. The guides offer varying topics of regional interest: the history of Atlanta, Georgia during the Civil War, early 20th century architecture, an 1845 Farmhouse, Mississippian Gardens, and Gullah Folk Art. www.atlantahistorycenter.com/teachers/html/resourceshome.htm
