HPD STAFF NEWS
Lannie Kittrell is the new survey and register specialist in HPD's Survey and Register Unit. She fills the position vacated by Ariel Lambert back in March. Lannie is a recent graduate of the Georgia State University heritage preservation program. She can be reached at 404-651-5911 or by e-mail at lannie_kittrell@dnr.state.ga.us.
Elizabeth Lambert is HPD's grants program summer intern. She is rising-senior at Agnes Scott College with a double major in History and Art. Once she graduates from Agnes Scott, Elizabeth plans to get her masters in historic preservation, then her PhD in history.

HERITAGE MATTERS SEEKS ARTICLES
Heritage Matters, the newsletter of the Cultural Resources Diversity Program of the National Park Service, is accepting articles for its next issue. The newsletter informs preservation professionals about what is taking place in diverse communities and offers those communities information about programs and resources from which they may benefit. Submitted material should be no more than 600 words and should include the author`s name and affiliation. The submission deadline is August 15, 2003. LANDMARKS OF AMERICAN HISTORY: WORKSHOPS FOR SCHOOL TEACHERS GRANT
The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) seeks proposals for a series of one-week residence-based workshops for K-12 educators that use historic sites to: provide teachers with training and experience in the use and interpretation of historical sites and the material and archival evidence of American history; increase the knowledge and appreciation of the places significant to American history; and encourage historical sites to develop greater capacity and scale for professional development programs. Workshops should be held at or near sites important to American history. The application deadline is August 15, 2003. NEA GRANTS FOR HERITAGE AND PRESERVATION
The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) announces funds for its Artistic Creativity and Preservation program. This initiative supports the creation and presentation to the American public of artistically excellent and significant works. The Heritage and Preservation subcategory seeks to preserve those forms of artistic expression and practice that reflect our nation`s many cultural traditions. Eligible applicants include nonprofit organizations and state and local government. The application deadline is August 18, 2003. VOLUNTEER INITIATIVE ENCOURAGES PROTECTION OF CULTURAL AND HISTORIC RESOURCES
Take Pride in America, a national initiative which encourages volunteer service to protect public parks, recreation areas and cultural areas, was kicked off on April 16th by Secretary of Interior Gayle Norton. The program is designed to work with governors and other partners to launch volunteer projects. To date, more than 100 charter partners have enlisted in the program. A recognition and awards component is included in the program. Take Pride in America is part of President Bush's USA Freedom Corp initiative.
