The Bank of Surrency, 80 Hart St., Surrency, Appling County was listed in the National Register on January 3, 2003.
At the January 31 National Register Review Board meeting, the following were recommended for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places:

LOCAL FOCUS: AUGUSTA CANAL HISTORY
The Augusta Canal Authority has published a history of the Augusta Canal by noted Georgia historian Edward J. Cashin. "The Brightest Arm of the Savannah" details the creation and construction of the canal as one of the South's few pre-Civil War industrial development projects, and assesses its continuing impact on the city's social and economic development through the 19th and 20th centuries. CALL FOR NOMINATIONS: NTHP AWARD FOR OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT IN PUBLIC POLICY
The National Trust for Historic Preservation (nthp) is currently accepting nominations for the John H. Chafee Trustees' Award for Outstanding Achievement in Public Policy. This award honors an outstanding contribution to historic preservation in the field of public policy. Nominations for this award are judged according to the following criteria: outstanding achievement in historic preservation public policy at the federal, state, or local level over a sustained period of time; broad and effective advocacy for the value of historic preservation to elected officials and government agencies, either as a colleague or constituent; leadership on issues of importance to historic preservation policy, as an elected official, career public servant, citizen volunteer or advocate; and success in broadening the base of support for historic preservation beyond its traditional constituencies. MICHAEL C. CARLOS MUSEUM POSITION AVAILABLE
Manager of Youth and Family Programs responsibilities include conducting Sunday afternoon programs, such as art workshops and museum-based activities on the Museum's permanent collection and temporary exhibitions, writing in-house gallery guides and publications for family visitors, directing the Museum's eight-week summer camp, being the "House Master" for a series of Saturday morning family chamber-music concerts, budget and staff management, participation in grant writing, development, creation and oversight of family events including Family Openings and Family Festivals. Teaching experience and professional art background required. Demonstrated interest in art history, art objects and their utilization in teaching interdisciplinary activities and studio skills required. Strong communication and interpersonal skills required. Must love children and working with families, volunteers, and enjoy a fast-paced multi-tasked position. Proficiency in Quark Xpress, Photoshop and Word are a plus. NPS HISTORIAN POSITION AVAILABLE
This position is located in the Cultural Resources Stewardship Division, National Park Service (NPS), Southeast Regional Office (SERO) in Atlanta. Incumbent is responsible for analyzing and evaluating a wide variety of cultural resource management plans, studies, project proposals, guidelines, memoranda of agreement, planning documents, and reports. Oversees, reviews, and/or assists in the preparation of the cultural resources components for resource management plans (RMPs) of parks or partnership areas. Prepares special issue policy briefs and directives for the division chief and Regional Directorate. Maintains continuing consultative relationships with fellow cultural resources professionals and others both within and outside the NPS for the

purpose of maintaining current information on historical, cultural resource management, and historic preservation activities. Serves as regional technical expert for compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act. Organizes and participates in training programs at the regional office level on cultural resource and preservation subjects. The closing date is February 14, 2003.
