UNUSUAL COLD WAR SITE EXAMINED
Historic Preservation Division environmental review staff recently visited a Cold War era fallout shelter on a former Georgia farmstead that may be affected by a federal undertaking. The family apparently placed this 8x12-foot-wide pre-fabricated metal structure several feet under the ground in 1960 or 1961. It still retains its four built-in bunks, air pipes, electrical wiring, waste pipe, and water faucet. Discussions are currently underway regarding the future of this interesting resource, which to date appears to be the only one of its type identified in the state.
