CHIEF VANN HOUSE LAND ACQUISITION
Listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1969, Chief Vann House is operated by the Parks and Historic Sites Division (PHSD) of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR). Located at Spring Place, Murray County, this two-story dwelling was built by African slaves in 1804 for Chief James Vann and was the first brick home in the Cherokee Nation. Only 24 of the plantation's original 1,000 acres are currently protected from inappropriate development.
The site is currently threatened by development that will place a 100-unit mobile home park and a commercial strip mall within 200 feet of its front door. The land surrounding the Vann House is critical to its interpretation. This development would destroy the viewshed and foreclose future opportunities for archaeological study, which could reveal
a wealth of information about the lives of Cherokees, African American slaves, and white laborers in the 1800s.
There is strong support for the $1.5 million purchase of this property to prevent its development. DNR has pledged at least $250,000, Murray County has dedicated $80,000 from the Governors 2002 Greenspace Program, and the Friends of the Vann House has committed to fundraise $500,000 from the private community. With private donations nearing $350,000, this grass-roots effort includes $3,000 from Murray County school children who held "Change for the Chief" drives at their local schools.
In 2002, HPD and PHSD launched a multi-disciplinary effort to locate a cemetery established in 1812 at the Moravian Springplace Mission near Chief Vann House. During the Cherokee removal in 1838, the Mission was forced to close by the Georgia Militia. Subsequent farming disturbed the flat stones that marked the gravesites and the cemetery, known as "God's Acre," disappeared. Using a combination of historical documents and ground-penetrating radar, HPD archaeologists located the grave shafts in early spring 2002. Public awareness of the archaeological investigations led to the privately held property being donated to PHSD as an addition to the Chief Vann House Historic Site. During the summer of 2002, representatives of both the Oklahoma and Eastern Band Cherokee Tribes, including the two principal chiefs, participated in a rededication ceremony. The success of the God's Acre archaeological project has led to a joint survey effort among the National Park Service trails office, the Georgia Chapter of the Trail of Tears, PHSD and HPD to locate and carry out a preliminary assessment of the Removal "forts" in Georgia.
