USG AWARDED CAMPUS HERITAGE INITIATIVE GRANT
The Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia (USG) has received a $180,000 Campus Heritage Initiative grant from the J. Paul Getty Trust. These grants are intended to assist American colleges and universities in planning for the preservation of their significant historic buildings, sites, and landscapes. Michael W. Miller, USG project manager and a former architectural reviewer with HPD, said, "we are moving forward with integrating historic preservation into our planning process. With the completion of the comprehensive Master Plan/Historic Preservation Plan for Georgia College & State University (GC&SU), we will have a strong "model" for our other institutions to follow. LAMAR INSTITUTE AWARDED ABPP GRANTS
In July, the National Park Services' American Battlefield Protection Program (ABPP) awarded 21 grants totaling $464,500 to support battlefield protection across the nation. Georgia's own LAMAR Institute (http://shapiro.anthro.uga.edu/Lamar/) received two grants! $24,000 to support both historical and archeological identification research at Sansavilla Bluff Battlefield, the site of an attack of the Spanish-allied Yamassee Indians in 1741. This site is under threat by timbering, looting and erosion and has not been adequately identified for preservation management. $25,364 to begin the process of historical and archeological research at Sunbury, the location of several Revolutionary War engagements in 1778, 1779, and 1782.
The ABPP grants program (www.cr.nps.gov/hps/abpp/2003grantawards.htm) seeks to address the well-documented and alarming rate of battlefield loss as well as threats by urban and suburban growth, natural erosion, human neglect and vandalism. Since its inception in 1990, the ABPP has awarded 191 preservation and enhancement projects to over 100 battlefield sites in 21 states and DC. In addition to grant making, the ABPP encourages and assists states, non-profits and local community groups with preservation, management and interpretation of sites.

LOCAL FOCUS: HEAD'S MILL, HALL COUNTY
On September 18, Head's Mill Historic Trust, Inc, will celebrate their contractual agreement with Hall County to restore the 153-year-old Head's Mill (also known as Healan's Mill) back to its original working operation. The mill, with its 25-foot diameter waterwheel and natural location, on the upper North Oconee River, will eventually be the centerpiece of an approximately 25 acre County park. The land purchase is being funded from State and County Greenspace funds and private donations. The completed restoration is estimated to cost $500,000. The board of trustees is currently organizing a "Friends of The Mill" group with a membership goal of 1000. Head's Mill was listed in the National Register in 1990. GA ARCHIVES SEEKS DESCRIPTIVE ARCHIVIST
The Georgia Archives is looking for an innovative, energetic and service-oriented descriptive archivist to work with state and county government records. The successful candidate, working with three other descriptive archivists, will play a major role in redesigning the Archives' finding aids and inventories to take advantage of new technologies and descriptive standards. Minimum qualifications include: an advanced degree in Archival or Public Administration, Library Science (from ALA-accredited program), History, or Political Science. Excellent interpersonal, oral, analytical and written communication skills; ability to work effectively with the public and staff. Must be able to lift 40 lbs.
