2003 GEORGIA HERITAGE GRANT RECIPIENTS ANNOUNCED
Governor Roy Barnes recently announced that the Georgia Heritage Grant Program has awarded 22 grants totaling $282,000 for historic preservation projects throughout state. The Georgia Heritage Grant Program is administered by the Historic Preservation Division of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources and provides matching grants for development and predevelopment projects. Development projects include stabilization, preservation, rehabilitation, and restoration activities. Predevelopment projects include plans and specifications, feasibility studies, historic structure reports, or other building-specific or sitespecific preservation plans. Forty-four applications were received requesting a total of $1 million in grant assistance to complete over $2.7 million in project work.

GOVERNOR'S COMMISSION ON GEORGIA HISTORY AND HISTORICAL TOURISM
Thanks to all the preservationists and archaeologists who spoke at the Commission's public hearing in Macon on August 16 and so eloquently articulated needs and concerns for strengthening preservation in Georgia. The Commission's final public hearing is scheduled for November 8 in Americus. The Commission is scheduled to release its final report and recommendations in early December.

NCPTT NEWS: GRANTS AVAILABLE AND A NEW EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Applications are now being accepted by the National Center for Preservation Technology and Training (NCPTT) for the 2003 Preservation Technology and Training Grants in historic preservation. Grants, which are awarded on a competitive basis, must address critical challenges to the preservation of our nation's cultural heritage through the innovative application of advances in science and technology. The NCPTT at Northwestern State University has named Kirk Cordell as the new executive director. Kirk has served as the National Park Service's Southeast Region reviewer of State Historic Preservation Office programs and the Preservation Tax Incentives programs. He became Chief of Cultural Resources Planning 1987 and served in a variety of management roles until assuming his most recent position as Chief of all Park Cultural Resources in the Southeast Region in 1996. Prior to coming to the National Park Service, he served as an architectural historian and managed the statewide structures inventory and Tax Act programs for the Louisiana State Historic Preservation Office.
