REQUEST FOR PROPOSALS FOR A HISTORIC CONTEXT FOR MID-20TH CENTURY APARTMENT COMPLEXES IN GEORGIA
The Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation and the Historic Preservation Division are seeking proposals from qualified consultants for the development of a historic context meeting state and federal standards for "modern" or mid-20th century apartment complexes in Georgia. The context will establish a framework for identifying, evaluating, and preserving mid-20th-century apartment complexes throughout the state.
The historic context will be used to support a variety of preservation activities in Georgia including surveys, National Register nominations, Section 106 determinations of eligibility, and preservation tax incentive projects. The historic context will be made available to a wide range of users including other state and federal government agencies, private nonprofit historical and preservation organizations, planning and historic preservation consultants, property owners, developers, and others.
Proposals must be delivered to the Georgia Trust by 4:00 p.m. on November 8, 2002. The project budget is $22,500. The project must be completed by the end of April 2003. For more information, contact: Glen Bennett, Senior Director, Preservation Department, Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation, 404-881-9980 or gbennett@georgiatrust.org.

LIGHTHOUSE TRANSFERS ANNOUNCED
Secretary of the Interior, Gale Norton, recently announced plans to consider the transfer of 20 historic lighthouses to new ownership. The transfers are made possible by the 2000 National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act that establishes a program to preserve lighthouses by

ceding their ownership to organizations, agencies, or local governments who can act as their long-term stewards. More than 300 lighthouses could potentially be made available. For more information about the 20 lighthouses (including St Simons Island Lighthouse), ownership eligibility requirements and the program itself visit www.doi.gov/lighthouses. The Tybee Island Lighthouse was recently transferred to the Tybee Island Historical Society, Inc.

ONLINE PHOTO COLLECTIONS FROM GSU
In celebration of Georgia Archives Week, (Oct. 6-12) Georgia State University's Special Collections Department has placed over 9,500 Atlanta area photographs (mostly from the 1940's & 50's) online at http://www.library.gsu.edu/spcoll/avcoll/atlphoto.htm
The photos are from two of Atlanta's leading commercial photography studios, Lane Brothers and Tracy O'Neal. The scans are linked from online descriptive inventories for over 32,000 photonegative envelopes that can be keyword searched or browsed. The scanned images are of negatives which were determined to be of high archival value and were in the most immediate

need of preservation. These scans are reference copies of the negatives placed into cold storage. Funding for the creation of the inventories and for selection of the negatives was provided by a grant from the Georgia Historical Records Advisory Board. Some highlights from the collections include:
Terminal Station, ca 1947 http://www.library.gsu.edu/spcoll/spcollimages/av/oneal/jpeg/N64-117_a.jpg
Peachtree Street with streetcar and trackless trolley near the Lowe's Grand Theatre, 1944 http://www.library.gsu.edu/spcoll/spcollimages/av/lane/jpeg/LBCB103-051b.jpg
