LOCAL FOCUS: TYBEE ISLAND AND MADISON RECEIVE PRESERVATION AWARDS
The American Institute of Architects Georgia chapter announced its 2002 Design Awards last month at their annual meeting in Atlanta. Architect Daniel E. Snyder of Savannah received an Award of Merit for historic renovation of Tybee Island Light Station head keeper's cottage (principal: Daniel E. Snyder). This project is a fine example of how TEA-21 funds are being used to preserve Georgia's transportation history.
The Georgia Planning Association held their awards program on September 26 during their annual meeting on Jekyll Island. The award for Outstanding Historic Preservation Project was presented to the Downtown Development Authority of Madison for Walker Rose Lane Neighborhood. The project addresses a variety of planning goals: downtown revitalization, smart growth alternative, community connectivity, historic preservation and affordable housing.

NEW NPS WEB SITE FOR LOCAL HISTORIC DISTRICTS
Check out the new National Park Service (NPS) Web site "Working on the Past." You'll find lots of helpful information about design guidelines, and other issues of interest to historic preservation commissions. http://www2.cr.nps.gov/workingonthepast/index.htm
The National Park Services' Technical Preservation Services, in collaboration with the Historic Preservation Planning Program and the Certified Local Government Program, are requesting input from your perspective and experience for use in a new Web guidance program, "Community Tool Box: In Answer to Your Questions About Common Rehab Issues." They are looking for your most challenging or problematical issues associated with rehab or design review in local historic districts. This idea is a continuation of Working on the Past in Local Historic Districts, recently posted at http://www2.cr.nps.gov/workingonthepast/index.htm. Please send your list of issues to Sue Renaud at sue_renaud@nps.gov or Kay Weeks at kay_weeks@nps.gov by November 23, 2002.
