GEORGIA SCHOOLS ON 2002 11 MOST ENDANGERED HISTORIC PLACES LIST
On June 6, the National Trust for Historic Preservation (NTHP) released its list of America's 11 Most Endangered Historic Places. Visit www.nthp.org/11Most/2002/index.html for the entire list and more information.
While no individual Georgia sites were listed, two site types affect our state: historic homes that are being torn down and replaced with dramatically larger, out-of-scale structures and historic African American schools. The Rosenwald Schools were built in the rural south for African Americans during the "Jim Crow" era in the early twentieth century. Philanthropist Julius Rosenwald provided grants to assist African American communities with their school-building programs. At one time, there were over 5,000 schools in the south including 242 in Georgia. NTHP's southern office is raising awareness of the schools' significance through the Rosenwald Initiative, an advisory panel of historians, preservationists and community developers. They plan to establish a Web site for researchers and develop publications. Georgia is researching what happened to schools in this state.
