MACON CHOSEN FOR NTHP'S PRESERVATION DEVELOPMENT INITIATIVE
Macon is one of four communities recently named as part of the Preservation Development Initiative, a new program created by the National Trust for Historic Preservation (NTHP) and the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation that uses historic preservation tools to foster economic development. Along with Miami, Fla.; St. Paul, Minn.; and Pontiac, Mich., Macon will receive strategic assessments and planning, technical assistance, loans and grants with a capitalized value of up to $1.8 million to build preservation-based economic development strategies and implementation programs. Four additional communities will be announced later this year. In all, 26 Knight Foundation communities are eligible to apply for grants over a threeyear period. Visit the NTHP's Web site at www.nthp.org/main_street/pdi.html for more information.

LOCAL FOCUS: FLANNERY O'CONNOR'S ANDALUSIA TO OPEN FOR TOURS
Andalusia, the National Register listed farm where Georgia author Flannery O'Connor lived and worked, will open this August for scheduled trolley tours for groups of fifteen people or more booked through the Milledgeville-Baldwin County Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB). Andalusia, owned by the Flannery O'Connor - Andalusia Foundation, has been closed to the public for decades. Renovation and restoration work is expected to begin soon, therefore visitors will remain on the trolley for the duration of the tours. For more information about tours, contact the CVB directly at 478-452-4687.
