The Governor's proposed budget cuts for SFY 2002 have been updated. Budget reductions are still in place for HPD's $50,000 design contract with Fernbank Museum and $5,000 for miscellaneous per diem expenses. Funding for Rhodes Hall restoration has been changed from a full reduction of $250,000 to a reduction of only $50,000. Information about the SFY 2003 budget reductions are expected to be released by the Governor in mid-January when he submits his proposal to the State Legislature. Keep in touch with the status of funding and bills during the 2002 Legislative Session through the e-mail network maintained by Georgians for Preservation Action (GAPA). FEDERAL FUNDING UPDATE
The National Park Service announced its annual awards from the FFY 2002 Historic Preservation Fund (HPF) for state historic preservation offices. Georgia's amount is $753,555. This is a $127,866 reduction from last year's FFY 2001 award of $881,421; but the same amount as in FFY 2000. The larger amount in FFY 2001 was in response to Congressional support of the Conservation and Reinvestment Act (CARA) initiatives. That support was not sustained for FFY 2002 allocations and due to shifting priorities and changes in the economy since September 11, the future of CARA and increased funding for the HPF have been on hold temporarily. Work is expected to being anew in January in Washington to make the case for preservation's role in stimulating local economies and in protecting the historic properties that reflect America's heritage.
