GEORGIA HISTORIC RESOURCES SURVEY FUNDS FOR 2003
HPD anticipates a $27,000 fund for surveys for SFY 2003. Work must be completed by June 30, 2003. Priorities for projects are: development pressure; lack of, or incompleteness of, an existing survey; and direct links to other preservation or planning activities. Countywide surveys are emphasized, but surveys of communities and surveys with broad regional or statewide benefits are also eligible. These surveys do not require matching funds, but sponsoring groups are encouraged to obtain local money and in-kind contributions for the projects. The deadline for submitting proposals is March 1, 2002. Anyone interested in sponsoring a survey may contact Kenneth Gibbs at 404-651-6432 for more information.

HISTORIC STRUCTURES SURVEYS
The following survey projects were completed and recently accepted by HPD: Heard County (492 properties); Seminole County (225 properties) and McDonough (356 properties). A multiyear survey project was completed in Savannah for the National Historic Landmark historic district through a joint project with the National Park Service, the Savannah College of Art and Design and with financial assistance from HPD's survey program. This effort documents for the first time the full range of Chatham County's historic properties; all were identified, surveyed and added to the statewide database.

MONTICELLO GOVERNMENT COMPLEX OPENS IN HISTORIC BENTON BUILDING
The City of Monticello recently celebrated the grand opening of its Government Complex, located in the historic Benton Building. Since 1997, HPD has assisted Monticello in its downtown revitalization efforts through the downtown design team and a series of grant projects, particularly for the planning and rehabilitation of the Benton Building on the square. Through the Certified Local Government and Better Hometown programs and with the assistance of the Northeast Georgia regional planning program, Monticello has taken full advantage of preservation programs and services to bring new life to its downtown and surrounding residential neighborhoods.
The Monticello Government Complex will house the Monticello City Hall, Monticello Crossroads Scenic Byway Trailhead, Visitor's Center and Museum, Historic Preservation Commission, Downtown Development Authority, Monticello-Jasper County Chamber of Commerce, Jasper County Development Authority as well as the Department of Family and Children's Services. Additional lease space is also available. Contact Pam Hammonds, Monticello's Better Hometown Manager at pam@inetnow.net for more information.
