2002 GENERAL ASSEMBLY REPORT
HB 1198 HB 1198 was introduced this session and amends current laws related to archaeological sites. Passage of the bill would significantly weaken Georgia's protection of archaeological sites by allowing unrestricted collecting of "isolated finds." HB 1198 will be considered by the House Natural Resources and Environment Subcommittee on Wednesday, February 20 at 2:00 p.m.
SFY 2002 and SFY 2003 Budgets The House is completing its proposal for the SFY 2002 mid-year adjustments and will soon start considering the SFY 2003 budget.
Detailed information about the 2002 legislative session, including the full text of all bills introduced, is available on the Internet at www.ganet.state.ga.us.
Mark your calendars for the annual legislative reception, February 25 at the Freight Depot in downtown Atlanta. Contact Georgians for Preservation Action (GAPA) for further details on these and other legislative issues. To be added to GAPA's e-mail network, send a message to Glen Bennett at gbennett@georgiatrust.org or call Glen at The Georgia Trust, 404-881-9980.

HISTORIC PRESERVATION FUND
The President's budget proposal for the FFY 2003 calls for a $5 million cut for state preservation offices. The National Park Service has not calculated the impact on Georgia's share, but there is no doubt that it would be significant. If approved, the cut could bring Georgia's annual amount down to 1990 levels.

GOVERNOR'S COMMISSION ON GEORGIA HISTORY AND HISTORICAL TOURISM
The Commission is hosting a public hearing on Tuesday, February 19, at 1:00 at the Atlanta History Center, 130 West Paces Ferry Road, Atlanta. Preservationists and archaeologists are encouraged to offer statements, either verbal or written. For further details, contact Commission Chair Ed Jackson at Carl Vinson Institute of Government, UGA, 706-542-2736 or jackson@cviog.uga.edu.
