STATION REVITALIZATION AND ITS ECONOMIC IMPACT
The Great American Station Foundation recently released a new study showing how restoration of historic train stations as transportation centers can act as a tool for downtown revitalization. The study, "Economic Impact of Station Revitalization" demonstrates the importance of intercity transportation services to local economies. It includes a step-by-step guide for communities to assess the economic impact of potential station projects. The study is available at http://www.stationfoundation.org in the news/publications section. (from the 4/19/02 NCSHPO Weekly Update)

BATTLEFIELD PROTECTION GRANTS
Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) monies are available to help States and local communities acquire and preserve threatened Civil War battlefield land. Authorized by the FY 2002 Department of the Interior Appropriations Act (Public Law 107-63), $11 million is allocated for matching grants. The American Battlefield Protection Program (ABPP) will administer the LWCF grants. The LWCF grants will be awarded to units of State and local governments. In any case where a private nonprofit organization seeks to acquire battlefield land with assistance from this program, that organization must apply in partnership with a State or local government agency. Please visit the ABPP Web site at www2.cr.nps.gov/abpp/LWCF2002.htm for more information.
