HPD would like to share this message from National Trust President Dick Moe issued in the September 19 edition of Preservation Advocate News. He has eloquently expressed the sentiments that many of us share.
AN OPEN LETTER TO ALL PRESERVATIONISTS:
Dear Preservationists:
Here at the National Trust our thoughts and prayers go out to all of the families of the victims of last week's tragic events in New York City and Washington, D.C. As our nation struggles to come to terms with the immense scope of this tragedy and its aftermath, it is already apparent that our country's historic resilience and resolve - even in the face of unspeakable sorrow - have begun to mend our broken hearts and the nation's fabric.
As the unthinkable events of September 11 unfolded before our eyes, America saw an attack on the proud symbols of our nation and our democracy. However, as we move forward from this tragedy, we can take pride as preservationists in the work we do everyday to save the most precious sites that symbolize the enduring strength and spirit of our nation. As stewards of these symbols, we are struck anew by the importance of their protection and preservation for future generations of Americans. In turn, these sites and symbols remind us that we collectively stand united in preserving our nation's heritage and preserving the democratic values that make being an American citizen so special and unique.
Very Sincerely, Richard Moe President
