NATIONAL REGISTER NEWS
Students from Georgia State University's Heritage Preservation program presented the results of their Spring 2001 Case Studies in Historic Preservation class project to staff members from HPD, The Georgia Trust and the Georgia Department of Transportation on November 1. "Atlanta Housing 1944-1965" looked at the architects, builders, and landscape designers active in Atlanta's postwar housing boom and the affects of zoning ordinances on the residential make-up of metropolitan Atlanta. This important research about soon-to-be-historic Georgia resources will be posted to HPD's Web site soon. Look for a notice in future issues of "Preservation Georgia Online."

DCA LAUNCHES QUALITY GROWTH GRANT PROGRAM
On October 1st, the Department of Community Affairs (DCA) launched the Quality Growth Grant Program. This $250,000 grant program is tailored to fund implementation of smart growth activities by local governments across the state. All Georgia municipalities, counties and
consolidated governments are eligible to apply for Quality Growth Grants. There will be two funding rounds each year, with the first applications due on November 15, 2001 and May 15, 2002. Grants may be requested for any amount between $5,000 and $40,000, but a project must be particularly innovative to be funded above $25,000. Recipient governments are expected to match the grant amount with cash and in-kind services. For more information, please visit DCA's Web site at www.dca.state.ga.us/grants/qualitygrowthgrant.html.

THE GEORGIA TRUST'S 2002 PRESERVATION AWARDS DEADLINE
Each year The Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation recognizes significant contributions to the preservation of Georgia's historic resources. The Awards Committee bases its decisions on the contributions of the person or project to the community and/or state and on the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for Rehabilitation. Awards in the categories of: Restoration, Rehabilitation, Stewardship, and Preservation Service will be presented at the Annual Meeting in April 2002. Nominations are due November 20, 2001. CALL FOR NOMINATIONS: THE PAUL E. BUCHANAN AWARD, VERNACULAR ARCHITECTURE FORUM
The Vernacular Architecture Forum (VAF) seeks nominations for the 2002 Paul E. Buchanan Award for Excellence in Field Work, Interpretation, and Public Service. Initiated by VAF in 1993, the Award recognizes contributions to the field of vernacular architecture and landscape studies and their preservation. The Award will be announced at the 2002 VAF Conference in Williamsburg, Virginia. Individuals or Organizations are eligible for consideration for their Public Service in the study and preservation of vernacular architecture and landscapes.
