HERITAGE DEVELOPMENT COURSE
A heritage development course will be held at the College of Charleston in Charleston, South Carolina, January 20-23, 2002. This is an advanced three-day training session for existing and potential heritage areas in the U.S. The event is sponsored by the Alliance for National Heritage Areas for purposes of advancing the organizational competencies of heritage areas in organizational development, marketing, and product development. THE FIRST HENRY D. GREEN SYMPOSIUM OF THE DECORATIVE ARTS
The first Henry D. Green Symposium of the Decorative Arts, The Savannah River Valley to 1865: Fine Arts, Architecture, and Decorative Arts, will explore the fine arts, architecture, and decorative arts of the Savannah River Valley to 1865 through the historical events, cultural traditions, and topographical features that shaped those arts. Scholars from several disciplines will present research on this often-overlooked area of Southern history, with topics ranging from the early Spanish presence in the region to the daily lives of African American women in Wilkes County, Georgia, to the refined architecture of Augusta in the 19th century. The symposium will take place at the Georgia Museum of Art in Athens January 25-26, 2002. It is free and open to the public, but reservations are required. HABS/HAER/HALS SUMMER EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES

The Historic American Buildings Survey/Historic American Engineering Record/Historic American Landscapes Survey (HABS/HAER/HALS), a division of the National Park Service, seeks applications from qualified individuals for summer employment documenting historic sites and structures of architectural, landscape and technological significance throughout the country. Duties involve on-site fieldwork and preparation of measured and interpretive drawings an written historical reports for the HABS/HAER Collection in the Prints and Photographs Division of the Library of Congress. Projects last twelve weeks, beginning in May/June. Salaries range from $4,500 to approximately $8,500 for the summer, depending on job responsibility, project location, and level of experience. CULTURAL DIVERSITY INTERNSHIP PROGRAM
The National Park Service (NPS) is accepting project proposals for the Cultural Resources Diversity Internship Program for the summer of 2002 and for the academic year 2002-2003. This program introduces diverse undergraduate and graduate students in history, anthropology, museum studies, architecture, and related disciplines to cultural resources/ historic preservation work. The program also gives NPS offices, national park units, government agencies at all levels, and private organizations an opportunity to meet promising young people who might choose a career in this field. NEH CHALLENGE GRANTS
The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) has announced a new challenge grant initiative for small institutions interested in improving their humanities resources in local history. These grants can be used to develop long-term programming or for cultural/ heritage tourism. The initiative's goals are: to build opportunities for research, education, and public programs in local history, especially in communities underserved by humanities activities; to establish long-term partnerships among educational and cultural organizations in a community; to help organizations in strategic planning; and to build a base of financial support for long-term programming.
