HCF RECOGNIZES KEN THOMAS AT ANNUAL MEETING
At the Historic Columbus Foundation's (HCF) recent annual meeting, HPD historian Ken Thomas was recognized with a certificate of achievement for compiling and writing the book, Columbus Georgia in Vintage Postcards. Congratulations Ken! Visit the HCF's Web site at www.historiccolumbus.com.

CULTURAL DIVERSITY IN THE COLONIAL SOUTH
Another book with an HPD connection is Another's Country: Archaeological and Historical Perspectives on Cultural Interactions in the Southern Colonies, edited by J. W. Joseph and Martha Zeirden. Dave Crass, our own state archaeologist, contributed to this new essay collection. Another's Country looks at the rise and fall of cultural diversity in the colonial South and its role in shaping a distinct southern identity. Written in accessible language, this book will be valuable to archaeologists and non-archaeologists alike. GOVERNOR'S HUMANITIES MEDALS
Each spring the Georgia Humanities Council honors the "humanities heroes" of our state through the presentation of the Governor's Humanities Medals. Governor Roy Barnes presents medallions to individuals and organizations who build community, character, and citizenship in our state through their efforts in humanities education. The presentations occur at a luncheon at the Old Georgia Railroad Freight Depot, in front of an audience of 500 citizens and legislators. Recipients of the Governor's Humanities Medals are nominated by the public, reviewed by a committee of the Georgia Humanities Council Board, and selected ultimately by the Governor. The Georgia Humanities Council accepts nominations for the Governor's Awards in the Humanities on a rolling a basis. The deadline for nominations for Awards for next year is November 19. Governor Barnes will present the medals at a public luncheon on Wednesday, March 6, 2002 at the Georgia Railroad Depot in Atlanta. Prior to the luncheon, Poet Laureate David Bottoms will speak about Georgia literary traditions. DEKALB COUNTY IN VINTAGE POSTCARDS
The DeKalb Historical Society announces the publication of its fourth book, DeKalb County in Vintage Postcards. There will be an open house and book signing on November 29 at the Old Courthouse in downtown Decatur. Decatur resident (and HPD historian) Ken Thomas, will also be in attendance to sign his postcard book on Columbus, Georgia. The DeKalb Historical Society offers this as an opportunity for local residents to view the place where local history is kept and shared.
