Historic Sapelo Island Church Rededicated
Established in 1866, the restored Raccoon Bluff African Baptist Church on Sapelo Island was rededicated on December 21. The century-old building had has been restored by students from the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) and island residents using funding from Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR), the Sapelo Island Cultural and Revitalization Society (SICRS), and the Governor's discretionary fund. DNR regional supervisor Bob Monroe says that the current church is thought to have been built in 1899 from lumber that a 1898 hurricane swept off Blackbeard Island and deposited on Sapelo Island's beaches. Among those attending the rededication ceremony were: Gov. Roy and Marie Barnes, DNR Commissioner Lonice Barrett, SCAD President Paula Wallace, Sapelo Island residents Ben Hall and Willie Mae Robinson, HPD Director Ray Luce, and HPD's Community Planning Coordinator Richard Laub.
