DNR/ SAPELO ART EXHIBIT AT THE STATE CAPITOL
As many of you know, the DNR manages Sapelo Island and the Reynolds Mansion. When R.J. Reynolds bought Sapelo Island in 1934, he hired Atlanta architect Philip Shutze to renovate the main house. Shutze had Atlanta muralist Athos Menaboni paint a series of murals in the house. The downstairs playroom was painted with pirate scenes. Over the years, and prior to DNR ownership, the pirate murals fell into disrepair and were cut up and placed in frames. The DNR, utilizing private donations, had the pirate paintings restored. The paintings will be on public display before being returned to Sapelo. After his work at Sapelo, Menaboni became a famous nature painter and was even referred to as the modern Audubon.
These paintings will be included in the first ever DNR art exhibit at the State Capitol. The exhibit will run from April 20 - May 4, 2001, in Room 230 of the State Capitol. The exhibit is open from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Also included in the exhibit are other Menaboni works from the DNR collection as well as a few pieces of Menaboni's work borrowed from other collections.

REGULATING RELIGIOUS LAND USE SPECIAL AUDIO CONFERENCE
The National Trust for Historic Preservation, in partnership with the American Planning Association and several other organizations, is co-sponsoring a special audio conference, Regulating Religious Land Use: Impact and Implications of New Federal Legislation on Wednesday, May 9, 2001 from 4:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. (Eastern).
Audio conference topics include: impact on zoning codes, overview of current litigation, legal strategies, effect of RLUIPA on Smart Growth initiatives, trends in state religious land use legislation, historic preservation & RLUIPA, what's next and how to cope.
