Region I- Calhoun (Northwest)
BARTOW COUNTY On October 13th, before the opening of firearms deer season, Sgt. Mike Barr responded to a call of illegal hunting for deer on Etowah Ridge Trail near Emerson. Sgt. Barr located a truck parked along the road and witnessed a man walking out of the woods in a fluorescent orange vest and carrying a 12 gauge shotgun. The man saw the DNR truck and stepped behind a tree. When asked what he was doing, the man first stated he was squirrel hunting. When Sgt. Barr asked for his hunting license, he then changed his story that he was carrying the shotgun for protection against another man who hunted the same area. Sgt. Barr checked the shotgun and it did not have a shot-shell in the chamber and did not smell as if it had been fired. Sgt. Barr checked and found that the hunter was in possession of Tink's deer scent, a camo facemask, and a flashlight, but no shot-shells. The hunter stated he was not deer hunting and did not even have any shells with him. Sgt. Barr contacted the DNR K-9 unit, RFC Brooks Varnell and his K-9 "Rock" who arrived with RFC Byron Young. The K-9 is trained to find firearm related objects and quickly located an unfired 12 gauge shot-shell slug hidden in a brush pile. RFC Byron Young asked the hunter if he recognized the shell and he admitted it was his and that he had hid it. The man was charged with hunting deer out of firearms season, hunting w/o a license, and hunting w/o a big game license.
On October 16th, Sgt. Mike Barr was returning from checking on a deer hunting complaint and traveling on Red Top Mountain Road where it crosses Lake Allatoona. He noticed several groups of people fishing along the shoreline and stopped to check their fishing licenses. He noticed a man in his 30s fishing alongside an older female and the man was acting nervous. Sgt. Barr asked for his fishing license and ID and he handed both to him. The female who was also fishing admitted she did not have a fishing license. Sgt. Barr noticed that the man's fishing license and ID addresses did not match so he contacted the Bartow County Sheriff's Office who checked on the man through their crime information computer. The man was wanted and had outstanding warrants in Cobb County. The man was arrested and transported to the Bartow County Jail to be

turned over to Cobb County PD. Sgt. Barr assisted the female with collecting their fishing gear.

RFC Brooks Varnell stopped a vehicle with a similar description as the one the landowner had reported. The truck had three men and a 14-year-old juvenile in camo in the truck. The Rangers discovered several parts of deer including deer meat, deer blood in the bed of the truck. The men had killed three bucks and taken the deer to a shed to process the meat. None of the hunters had recorded their harvest of the bucks as required by law. RFC Byron Young issued the two men citations for failing to record their deer harvest (simply writing the date and sex of the harvest on their hunting license). No action was taken with the juvenile; however the Rangers encouraged the adults to teach the young hunter the proper way of applying the wildlife laws.
