Weekly Report December 28, 2008-January 3, 2009
This report is a broad sampling of events that have taken place in the past week, but does not include all actions taken by the Law Enforcement Section.
Region I- Calhoun (Northwest)
FLOYD COUNTY On January 3rd, Cpl. Shawn Elmore and Ranger Brad Hamby were patrolling along the Coosa River checking fishermen. At Blacks Bluff Extension Bridge the officers encountered an Asian man walking up the bank carrying a five-gallon bucket full of fish. He stated that he and his wife were fishing together. Ranger Hamby counted the fish and the man had 43 striped bass in the bucket. Cpl. Elmore proceeded to the river to check the wife's fishing license. The female did not have any fishing license. Citations were issued to the man for possession of over the daily creel limit and the female was issued a citation for fishing without a license. The rangers confiscated the fish and went back to the parking area. The two individuals also came to the parking area and went to a small blue hatchback car. Cpl. Elmore had walked past that small blue car and noticed a cooler in the rear compartment of the hatchback. He approached the male and asked if he had any fish in the cooler and the man stated yes. Cpl. Elmore opened the cooler and retrieved 68 more striped bass from the cooler. A total of 111 striped bass were confiscated from the two individuals. The fish were taken and turned over to a needy family.
GORDON COUNTY On December 27th, Cpl. Shawn Elmore and Ranger Brad Hamby were patrolling for raccoon hunters and located a vehicle parked on the side of Covington Bridge Rd on Spring Creek Hunting Club. The officers heard dogs and located five adult hunters and one juvenile hunter hunting raccoons on the club. None of the hunters were members of Spring Creek Hunting Club. All of the adults were issued citations for hunting on lands of another without permission. One of the hunters was issued a citation for hunting without license.
WHITFIELD COUNTY On December 28th, RFC Tompkins was checking deer hunters and found a hunter sitting in a ground blind with a pipe feeder filled with corn approximately 30 yards away. The subject was charged with hunting big game over bait.
On January 1st, RFC Eddie Tompkins was checking hunters in north Whitfield County when he encountered two hunters walking across a field. One of the subjects was not wearing fluorescent orange. Neither subject had a hunting license. Both subjects were issued citations for hunting without license and one subject was issued a warning for hunting deer without fluorescent orange.
On January 2nd, RFC Eddie Tompkins completed an investigation that started on December 27th with two raccoon hunters having their dogs shot while hunting in the early morning hours. After daylight RFC Tompkins accompanied the hunters to the area and located one dog shot and dead and one dog shot and injured. The injured dog was taken to Chattanooga to an animal hospital for surgery. The dog is expected recover but with extreme facial injury. After a couple of days of investigation a subject was interviewed by RFC Tompkins and admitted to shooting the dogs. The subjected stated that he was hog hunting and the dogs came by him at about 2 am and he was upset because he thought they would run off all the hogs. He shot the dogs and left the area. On January 2nd RFC Tompkins took arrest warrants on the suspect for aggravated animal cruelty and hunting without a license.
Region II- Gainesville (Northeast)
DAWSON COUNTY On January 1st, Cpl. Jason Roberson and Sgt. Lee Brown were patrolling for deer hunters off of Auraria Road. The rangers saw a vehicle drive down a woods road. After following the vehicle it stopped at another vehicle. The rangers talked with the driver and he was there to assist his brother in retrieving a deer. This subject also told the rangers that he had already killed seven deer himself this season. After he assisted his brother retrieve his deer the rangers followed him to his resident. It was determined that he had killed five antlered bucks during the season. Citations and warnings were issued for taking over the limit, possession of illegally taken wildlife and failure to record deer harvest.
FORSYTH COUNTY On December 28th, RFC Pamela Shelton received a call from Forsyth County dispatch saying that a deputy had checked two hunters on Mount Tabor Road and one did not have hunting license. RFC Shelton responded and issued a citation for hunting without a license and a warning for hunting without a big game license.
LUMPKIN COUNTY On December 30th, RFC Mitchell Crump and Wildlife Technician III David Shattuck were patrolling Chestatee WMA at Dick's Creek. While on patrol they encountered a subject fishing in Dick's Creek, which is a closed trout stream. The subject was issued a citation for fishing in a closed stream.
On January 2nd, Sgt. Lee Brown and Wildlife Technician III David Shattuck were patrolling Chestatee WMA on a managed deer hunt. While checking a subject at Boggs Creek, it was determined that he was a convicted felon. The subject was arrested for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and possession of marijuana less than one ounce. The subject is also on probation for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and had an outstanding warrant for his arrest in Hall County.
ROCKDALE COUNTY January 1st, Cpl. Eric Sanders received a complaint from a landowner about two subjects hunting without permission. Cpl. Sanders cited the two subjects for hunting without permission and hunting without fluorescent orange
On January 3rd, Sgt. Lee Brown and Cpl. Eric Sanders were patrolling in Rockdale County for deer hunters when they found a site where trash had been dumped. The rangers went to a house of an address that was found. The subject admitted that it was his trash but he hired a "Geek Monster" to haul off the trash. The subject was issued a citation for littering. After leaving the resident it was determined that the subject had an outstanding warrant for his arrest in Rockdale County. While waiting for a Rockdale County Deputy for assistance the rangers saw the subject who they have just issued a citation driving out of his subdivision. A traffic stop was made and the subject was placed under arrest for driving on a suspended license and the outstanding warrant. He was turned over to the Rockdale County Sheriff's Office.
BANKS COUNTY On January 1st, Cpl. Adam Loudermilk was patrolling for illegal waterfowl activity. Approximately 20 minutes after legal shooting hours, he heard several shots. He contacted RFC Chris Moore for assistance. The rangers located five hunters and charged them with hunting waterfowl after hours. Three were charged for hunting without GA waterfowl license. Subjects were also warned for possession of illegally taken wildlife, no life jackets, no boat registration, and for not signing their Federal Duck stamp. They confiscated five illegally taken wood ducks.
Region III- Thomson (East Central)
BURKE COUNTY On December 28th, RFC Jeff Billips assisted Sgt. William Vickers, Cpl. Eddie Akins and Cpl. Shaymus McNeely with a fatality involving a hunter falling from a tree stand in Effingham County.
On December 30th and 31st, Cpl. Ben Payne and RFC Grant Matherly assisted RFC Billips on a night hunting complaint in Burke County. The complaint remains under investigation. RFC Billips met with a landowner in Richmond County regarding hunting without permission and over bait. RFC's Billips and Matherly worked a night hunting complaint in Burke County.
On January 1st, RFC Billips checked a hunter in Midville who was issued citations for hunting deer without fluorescent orange and hunting without license on person. The hunter was warned for hunting big game over bait.
On January 2nd, RFC Billips received a night hunting complaint in Burke County. The complaint remains under investigation.
On January 3rd, RFC Billips and Sgt. Max Boswell assisted Cpl. Michael Crawley in Johnson County on a deer dogging complaint. No contact was made but as Billips and Boswell returned to Burke County, they received a deer dogging complaint on Briar Creek Sportsman Club. Upon arrival, Billips and Boswell located several club members who were in the process of catching dogs off permitted property. Citations and warnings were issued for hunting deer on an unpermitted property and operating a motor vehicle without permit number displayed. Then Billips and Boswell received a complaint of hunting deer with dogs without permit in another part of Burke County. No contact was made but the incident remains under investigation.
ELBERT COUNTY On January 1st, Corporal Greg Colson and Corporal Julian Wilkins caught 4 subjects shooting ducks after hours. 10 citations and warnings were written for hunting after legal hours, hunting without a license, hunting without a Georgia waterfowl license, and hunting without a federal waterfowl stamp.
COLUMBIA COUNTY In response to an in-progress complaint, two subjects were apprehended hunting deer without permission and orange vest violations off of the Savannah River.
RFC Robert Timmerman responded to two in progress hunting without permission complaints. No contact was made with any suspects.
LINCOLN COUNTY Cpl. Ryan Swain and RFC Robert Timmerman apprehended three subjects while on patrol of the Little River for hunting waterfowl from a moving vessel. The subjects were also cited for several license violations.
Region IV- Macon (West Central)
JONES COUNTY On the morning of January 1st, RFC Chad Welch and Cpl. Bill Goodson were patrolling an area in south Jones County when they located an individual hunting deer. Further investigation revealed that the hunter was hunting over bait and a warning was issued.
BALDWIN COUNTY On January 3rd, at around 1:00 A.M., RFC Chad Welch and Cpl. Bubba Stanford responded to a night hunting complaint inside the city limits of Milledgeville. Baldwin County Deputies had responded to the scene and were able to detain the subjects until the rangers arrived. The subjects were night hunting in the Walter B. Williams recreational area on Hwy. 212. A spotlight and a Marlin 30-30 were confiscated as evidence. Two of the subjects were arrested and charged with hunting deer at night, hunting from a public road and hunting from a motor vehicle while the third subject, a juvenile, was turned over to his parents.
TROUP/HEARD COUNTIES On December 28th, Cpl. Jim Bradfield was checking one of the shooting preserves in Heard County. The Ranger located a vehicle with a North Carolina tag parked near a tower deer stand on this property. There was a subject hunting in this stand and upon hearing Cpl. Bradfield's vehicle pull up the subject looked out one of the windows. Cpl. Bradfield made contact with the subject who claimed to be varmint hunting but was hunting with a 25-06 rifle. The subject did not have any Georgia hunting license and was issued a citation for non-resident hunting without a license. Sunday evening Cpl. Bradfield checked a baited deer stand located on Corps of Engineers property in Heard County. A hunter was located in the stand and this hunter was drinking a beer at the time he was checked. The hunter did not have a permit to hunt Corps of Engineers property. A citation was issued for hunting big game over bait and a warning issued for hunting without permission. The Corps of Engineers was also notified of the incident.
On January 3rd, Cpl. Jim Bradfield checked eleven duck hunters on the main tract of land on West Point WMA in LaGrange. On the way to listen for a late duck shoot, Cpl. Bradfield checked the shooting range on West Point WMA. There were about 15 persons shooting or observing at the range at this time and 9 of these shooters were not wearing the required safety glasses. About half of these 9 also had not signed in at the kiosk. Warnings were issued for these violations.
CRAWFORD COUNTY On January 1st, while working waterfowl hunting activity, RFC Josh Swain encountered a boat at the Highway 96 boat ramp on the Flint River. Upon checking three subjects in the boat it was determined they were returning from hunting ducks. The vessel was found to contain an insufficient number of personal flotation devices and one hunter lacked the required Federal Duck stamp. Written warnings were issued for the infractions.
On January 3rd RFC Josh Swain checked a number of subjects hunting doves. Two hunters were found to be hunting without licenses and were issued citations for the offense.
HOUSTON COUNTY On January 1st, RFC Tim Butler checked a deer stand he had previously documented as being baited. One subject was subsequently apprehended while hunting from the stand and cited for the infraction.
TAYLOR COUNTY On the afternoon of January 3rd, RFC Josh Swain checked several deer stands, which were previously documented as being baited. One subject was apprehended and cited for hunting big game over bait.
LAMAR COUNTY On January 3rd, RFC Keith Page and Sgt. Tim Kendrick located a dove shoot on Bush Rd. in Lamar County. RFC Page crossed the field and rounded up all of the hunters as Sgt. Kendrick went to the hunter's vehicle to look for any hidden doves and to make sure no one tried to leave the field. While walking across the pasture toward the hunters, it was obvious to RFC Page that the cow pasture that the men were hunting over was heavily baited with wheat. The pasture had been grain drilled with wheat about two weeks prior. In addition to the drilled wheat, there was also a large amount of wheat seed on the ground. It was apparent that the wheat seed had been spread in order to draw more birds to the field. RFC Page took several pictures of the large amount of wheat seed on top of anthills to prove his case. All 6 men on the field were charged with hunting doves over bait.
BUTTS COUNTY On January 3rd, at approximately 7:30 am, while patrolling Butts County for duck hunting activity, RFC Smith located 2 trucks parked on Fill Bridge Rd. at the Towaliga River. While investigating the vehicles, RFC Smith heard several shots from south of the Highway 36 bridge. RFC Smith responded to the area by boat and made contact with 4 individuals duck hunting on High Falls State Park. The individuals were not from the area and claimed not to know hunting was not allowed on the Towaliga River south of the Highway 36 bridge. The subjects were issued written warnings for Hunting on a State Park.
On January 3rd, at approximately 5:30 pm, RFC Smith staked out a beaver pond on Rough Rd. after receiving information about a roost shoot that had occurred on January 2nd. RFC Smith began hearing shots from the pond at 5:45 pm. RFC Smith contacted State Park Rangers Ken Lalumiere and Cliff Tippens from Indian Springs Sate Park for assistance. The shooting stopped at 6:15 pm and RFC Smith and Ranger Lalumiere approached the individuals as they returned to their vehicles. Contact was made with 6 adult subjects and 1 juvenile. The adult subjects were charged with hunting migratory birds after hours. The 3 wood ducks in their possession were confiscated and donated to the First Baptist Church of Jackson.
MONROE COUNTY On January 3rd, Corporal Tony Wynne was checking boats and waterfowl hunters at Holly Grove access on Lake Juliette, one of the boats checked was occupied by three teenage waterfowl hunters. The boat had all of its safety equipment and the hunters had all of their licenses. While checking the shotguns, though, one of them proved to be unplugged. The young hunter was given a warning for hunting with an unplugged shotgun.
Region V- Albany (Southwest)
BROOKS COUNTY On January 3rd, RFC Jon Penuel and Corporal Tommy Daughtrey checked a morning duck shoot where approximately fourteen hunters were participating. After checking the pond and the hunters, the officers discovered that all of those involved were hunting with illegal ammunition (lead shot); all the hunters involved were cited for the violation.
COLQUITT COUNTY On January 3rd, Sgt. David Ruddell was conducting a night deer hunting patrol when he encountered several subjects in a van actively hunting at night. The van was stopped, and six individuals were arrested and interviewed, resulting in numerous charges for night deer hunting and other violations.
SEMINOLE COUNTY On January 3rd, RFC Jeff Phillips responded to a call in reference to someone operating a vessel under the influence on Lake Seminole. Officer Phillips, working in conjunction with the Seminole County Sheriff's Department apprehended the violator who was subsequently charged with operating a vessel under the influence.
GRADY COUNTY On December 28th, Cpl. Mike Binion and Cpl. Terri Jones responded to a call of hunting without permission along the Ochlocknee River. Three subjects were checked at the Hadley Ferry landing and citied for hunting without non-resident and Georgia waterfowl licenses.
DECATUR COUNTY On December 30th, RFC Tony Cox and RFC Jeff Phillips apprehended four individuals shooting a duck roost. The four were charged with hunting waterfowl after hours and one subject was additionally charged with not having a federal duck stamp.
On December 31st, RFC Tony Cox and RFC Jeff Phillips were conducting a patrol on Silver Lake WMA when they observed a vessel occupied by two male subjects in possession of an eight-point buck. While interviewing the subjects, it was discovered they were not selected for the quota deer hunt on the WMA. Both subjects were charged with hunting on a wildlife management area without a permit and one citation was issued for possession of illegally taken wildlife. The deer was confiscated.
Region VI- Metter (Southeast)
APPLING COUNTY On December 18th, Ranger Altman gave an Information & Education presentation to the Appling Kiwanis Club about Conservation Rangers around the state. Later that day while patrolling the county, Ranger Altman noticed a trash pile burning. A warning for unlawful burning of waste was written to the subject who started the fire.
On December 27th, Ranger Altman was answering a complaint about an illegal fox pen. The pen was located along with several foxes. The owner was given a copy of the regulations needed to run a fox pen legally, along with phone numbers to call. A warning was given to the subject for the fox pen.
On December 28th, Ranger Altman was called out to a complaint of shots fired on a public road. Upon arriving at the bridge, Ranger Altman noticed a young man shooting his rifle into the creek. Later investigation revealed the young man was throwing bottles into the creek and shooting them. The creek was next door to a heavily populated community. The man was given a citation for discharging a firearm from a public road and a warning for littering.
On January 3rd, Ranger Altman answered a hunting w/o permission complaint that resulted in one citation for hunting big game over bait.
BACON COUNTY On December 31st, Corporal Jimmy Williams was working a night hunting detail in a complaint area. At about 9:45 pm a vehicle approached the area and a light was shined from the bed of the pick-up into the blueberry field. The vehicle was stopped and it was determined that the male occupant of the bed of the truck had a 17 cal rifle and a streamlight. The two male occupants accounted for six violations of hunting rabbits at night, hunting from a vehicle and hunting from a public road. After releasing the vehicle Cpl Williams moved to another nearby location. At about 11:00 pm a vehicle approached his location and a light was shined into the peanut field. The vehicle was stopped and a .17 cal rifle was located on the back seat with the clip located between the driver's feet in the floorboard. The male and female occupants accounted for six violations of hunting rabbits at night, hunting from a vehicle and hunting from a public road.
On January 1st, Corporal Jimmy Williams responded to a landowner complaint of hunting hogs without permission. Five individuals were located on the property and seven violations were detected, including five for hunting hogs without permission and two for hunting without a license.
LOWNDES COUNTY On December 28th, Ranger Keith McDonald received a call from S.O.C. about a group of individuals camping on Grand Bay WMA. He located the campers on a no camping area. Verbal guidance was given and the campers were instructed to leave the area.
On January 1st, Ranger Keith McDonald responded to shots fired on the Withlacoochee River. Upon arriving he discovered that several individuals had been shooting targets. Before leaving the area he noticed a campfire in the woods. He approached the camp and observed an individual place a tire on the fire. A citation for unlawful burning of waste was issued.
CHARLTON COUNTY On December 29th, Cpl. Gary Simmons and RFC Mark Carson responded to a night hunting complaint on Highway 40 at the Charlton and Camden County Line. The complainant called in hearing a gun shot around 8:45 pm. The officers arrived at the area and located the suspect's vehicle and two occupants. The driver was charged with underage possession of alcohol and open container violation. The passenger was determined to have an outstanding warrant for his arrest in South Carolina. The passenger was charged with possession of ammunition by a convicted felon. He was held for the warrant from South Carolina.
On January 1st, Cpl Gary Simmons and Sgt. Patrick Dupree were patrolling deer-dog hunting leases. One individual was observed with his loaded shotgun on a county road participating in a deer dog hunt. He was charged for hunting big game from a public road. Cpl. Simmons and Sgt. Dupree also located several individuals hunting an area that was not permitted for deer dogs. All were charged with hunting with dogs on unpermitted property. Two individuals were charged with hunting without big game licenses and warned for hunting without licenses. The group was informed how to obtain a deer-dog permit for the property for next season.
On January 1st, Cpl. Gary Simmons and Sgt. Patrick Dupree were patrolling deer hunting leases north of Okefenokee NWR entrance off GA Hwy. 121. A vehicle was located parked along a timber company roadway with an empty shelled corn bag in the rear of the vehicle. Using K-9 Jake, Cpl. Simmons and Sgt. Dupree tracked the individual to his stand. He was charged with hunting big game over bait and hunting without a big game license. He was warned for hunting without a license. Two more individuals were located hunting deer over bait on the same hunting lease that afternoon and were charged with hunting big game over bait.
CLINCH COUNTY On December 29th, Sgt. Patrick Dupree responded to an in-progress deer-dogging complaint on GA 187 near the Clinch-Echols line. While patrolling the area, Sgt. Dupree encountered a deer-dog hunter operating a motor vehicle without deer-dog permit number displayed and hunting deer with unmarked dogs. He was issued written warnings for the violations.
On December 30th, Sgt. Patrick Dupree continued to patrol the deer-dogging complaint area on GA 187. Sgt. Dupree issued two written warnings while in the area, one for hunting deer with unmarked dogs and one for non-resident hunting without a license. The individual without a license had been hunting with the deer-dogging party and upon learning, via CB-radio traffic, that the game warden was in the area, put his shotgun, still loaded with buckshot, into a gun case behind his vehicle's seat. Sgt. Dupree located and advised the subject to either go purchase the required licenses or discontinue hunting. The subject left the area after being issued the warning.
On January 1st, RFC Jason Shipes and RFC Brad Cox located a dove shoot south of Homerville on Hwy 441. While checking the field, one citation was issued for hunting without a license.
On January 3rd, RFC Jason Shipes had suspicion that someone was deer hunting over bait near Cason Road. After locating the subject, RFC Shipes found that the hunter was approximately 20 feet from a pile of shelled corn. The hunter was issued a citation for hunting big game over bait.
ECHOLS COUNTY On December 31st, Sgt. Patrick Dupree was patrolling deer-dogging leases south of GA Hwy. 94. Sgt. Dupree encountered two hunters hunting deer with unmarked dogs. Both were issued written warnings for the violation.
On January 3rd, Sgt. Patrick Dupree and Cpl. Damon Winters located a dove shoot occurring south of Statenville off US Hwy. 129. The harvested produce field was baited with shelled and cracked corn. Eight individuals were shooting on the field. Seven warnings for hunting doves over bait were issued. The landowner (host of the hunt) was issued a citation for unlawful enticement of game.
BULLOCH COUNTY On January 3rd, Sgt. William Vickers and Cpl. Dave Sims patrolled the Brooklet area in an unmarked vehicle and located four vehicles from local deer dog clubs parked illegally on Vincent Road and Railroad Bed Road. The hunters/owners of the vehicles were issued citations and released at the scene.
On January 3rd, Cpl. Sims and RFC Debbie Brannen located a vehicle parked illegally on JM Strickland Road. The hunter/owner was issued a citation and released at the scene.
On December 30th, Cpl. Eddie Akins responded to two complaints in reference to deer dogging. Investigation of the first complaint revealed that the hunters had left the area before Cpl. Akins arrived. The second complaint was in reference to a dog that had been caught by an individual while trying to hunt late that afternoon. The owner of the dog was located and a violation for failure to keep dogs on permitted property was documented.
On January 1st, Cpl. Eddie Akins responded to a call from an individual that had caught a dog that afternoon while trying to hunt. The owner of the dog was located and a violation of failure to keep dogs on permitted property was documented.
EFFINGHAM COUNTY On January 2nd, Ranger Brandon Pierce checked river landings for boating activity. Two violations were documented for no registration and no life jackets.
On January 3rd, Ranger Brandon Pierce checked a dove shoot that had eight hunters and no violations were documented. Also, local deer dogging clubs were checked and four violations were documented of hunting without a license and no deer dog license. Later that day Ranger Brandon Pierce checked river landings, which resulted in numerous fisherman and boaters being checked. No violations were found.
EMANUEL COUNTY On January 2nd Cpl. Dave Sims responded to an anonymous dog hunting complaint on Blue Bonnet road and located a vehicle parked illegally on the roadway. The hunter/owner was cited and released at the scene.
Region VII- Brunswick (Coastal)
CHATHAM COUNTY On Jan. 1st, Ranger Buster Cooper issued an individual a citation for littering. Ranger Cooper watched the individual discard 2 bags of household garbage along Chevis Road.
BRYAN COUNTY On December 29th, Cpl. Cindy Miller responded to an in progress complaint on her off day after calling an on duty Ranger who was not able to respond. Cpl. Miller responded to a pond on a hunting club where she checked two duck hunters who both had violations. One subject was cited for unplugged shotgun and lead shot. The other subject was cited for no Georgia waterfowl license and no Federal duck stamp.
On January 3rd, Cpl. Cindy Miller patrolled the Wildlife Management Area (WMA) in South Bryan. She cited an individual for hunting on the WMA without a WMA license.
On January 3rd, Ranger Randy Tinley, Cpl. Jay Morgan, and Cpl. Cindy Miller patrolled the saltwater in Bryan County. Several fishermen were checked. Two subjects were fishing at the old Bryan COOP on the docks. These two subjects were cited for fishing without permission. In addition, one of the subjects was cited for fishing without a license.
LIBERTY COUNTY On January 1st, Cpl. Cindy Miller patrolled property she knew no one had permission to hunt on. After driving up on an individual with a gun standing on a road inside the property and talking to the subject, Cpl. Miller determined there were several individuals hunting illegally. Cpl. Miller called Cpl. Jay Morgan for assistance with rounding the
individuals up. Cpl. Morgan along with Ranger Isaac Strickland responded. In all, five subjects were cited for both hunting without permission and hunting deer with dogs on unpermitted property. In addition, two of the subjects were cited for hunting deer with no orange vest. One of these subjects was also cited for hunting without a license and hunting without a big game license.
On January 1st, Cpl. Cindy Miller patrolled property she knew no one had permission to hunt on. Cpl. Miller approached a vehicle parked across railroad tracks inside the property. After talking with the subjects inside the vehicle, Cpl. Miller determined she had an individual hunting hogs without permission. Cpl. Miller followed the vehicle to pick up the subject. The subject was cited for hunting without permission, hunting hogs without an orange vest, and hunting without a license. Cpl. Jay Morgan also assisted Cpl. Miller.
CAMDEN COUNTY On December 22nd, Cpl. Jesse Cook, Cpl. Chris Hodge and Cpl .Gary Simmons and his K9 assisted the Kingsland Police Department and the Georgia Bureau of Investigations in the search for a weapon used in a triple homicide. After the shooting occurred, several suspects were seen fleeing the area, and it was believed that they might have tossed the murder weapon in a wooded area near the murder scene, however, no weapon was recovered.
On January 3rd, RFC Craig Smith and Sgt. Bob Lynn were working a night hunting detail in separate locations. RFC Smith heard two shots from his location and determined the location they came from. He then moved to that area while he called Sgt. Lynn and got him in route to the location. RFC Smith then noticed that a truck had turned around and pulled off the side of the road. One subject had got out of the truck to look for the deer in the woods. RFC Smith and Sgt. Lynn got all three subjects back to the truck and conducted interviews. The three subjects were cited for hunting deer at night, hunting big game from a public road, and hunting from a vehicle.
GLYNN COUNTY On January 3rd, while on routine patrol, Cpl. Jesse Cook came up on a two-car accident at the end of the Jekyll Island causeway. Cpl. Cook notified the Georgia State Patrol and then began checking for injuries. Several individuals from the first vehicle were injured and were sitting on the roadway. Another vehicle that was sitting on its side had another individual that was trapped under the door. Several off duty officers from the Brunswick Police Department had stopped and were assisting the injured. Cpl. Cook notified GSP dispatch of the injuries and entrapment and began attempting to re-direct traffic.
WAYNE COUNTY On December 30th, RFC Randy Aspinwall was working a night hunting complaint on Lake Lanell road. He watched as a silver mustang came by shining a pecan orchard. He then stopped the vehicle and found three subjects inside. They had a spotlight and a
shotgun loaded with buckshot. Citations were written for hunting deer at night with the aid of a light, hunting from a public road, and hunting from a vehicle.
