Georgia Adopt-A-Stream partnered with Georgia River Network to provide outreach and monitor the Flint River for an eighth time during this year's Paddle Georgia Fall Float on the Flint canoe and kayak trip. Fed by aquifers and clear spring pools, the Flint is home to some of Georgia's most amazing biodiversity such as native Georgia mussels, turtles, snakes, and fish! This section of the Flint is fed by enormous underground aquifers that are visible as multiple (snorkel-able) blue hole springs, and lucky for us, the river was low enough for excellent visibility! The Flint River is truly a hidden gem in Georgia and we encourage you to get out here and show your Georgia rivers some love. We would like to thank Georgia River Network, AAS trainers, volunteers, and the monitoring team for another great trip!

On October 8th and 9th, AAS staff and volunteers sampled 8 mainstem sites, 1 tributary site, 4 spring sites, and 1 National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) site, resulting in 14 sampling sites in total. Samples were tested for AAS core chemical parameters (air temperature, water temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, and conductivity) as well as nutrients and E.coli bacterial levels. AAS staff conducted outreach throughout the trip by providing demonstrations and answering questions while out in the field.
A summary of the trip's sample results can be seen in the below chart. Complete results are available from the AAS State Office upon request. On this trip, the water quality data was found to be generally good and consistent with data collected at the same sites in years past. pH levels were found to be nearing the upper end of the state standard range (6-8.5), which can likely be attributed to the naturally occurring limestone formations throughout the river. For analysis of previous Fall Float data and a more detailed description of general water quality results on the lower Flint River, please see the Oct/Dec 2019 AAS Newsletter here.

We would like to extend our thanks to everyone that contributed to Georgia Adopt-A-Stream over this past year. Our program could not function without your efforts and support, so we sincerely appreciate all that you do!
Your monitoring data is incredibly valuable to the EPA data requests and reports that we will be compiling in the next few weeks. So if you have a stack of data sheets on your desk, now is the time to submit that information to the Georgia Adopt-A-Stream database! We want to ensure accurate and complete reporting in order to represent the dedication and effectiveness of community scientists in water quality monitoring. You can help us immensely by inputting any backdated or current monitoring data as soon as possible, and no later than the end of this month.
Thank you so much for all of your hard work and dedication to protecting our waterways. We look forward to seeing all of your accomplishments in 2023!

Thanks to the efforts of all organizers and volunteers, Rivers Alive had another successful year of statewide cleanups. Cleanup results are still rolling in, but so far, an estimated 191, 222 pounds of garbage was collected during 84 Rivers Alive cleanup events, and about 5, 661 volunteers donated 18, 677 hours of their time to help directly improve water quality across Georgia. We appreciate your incredible work to beautify our waterways and educate people across the state about why water quality matters.
If you held a cleanup this fall, please submit your final tally as soon as possible so we can
finalize our yearly report.
Please return extra shirts and materials to the Rivers Alive state office so we can share them with other volunteers! Additionally, if you are planning on holding a cleanup in the spring and would like to provide t-shirts and educational materials to your volunteers, please reach out to us at Rivers.Alive@dnr.ga.gov for more information.
