WEEKLY SUMMARY

Legislative Week # 3
The House of Representatives completed its third full week of the legislative session. Legislators presented House bills and House resolutions this week, and all passed with little to no opposition. On Wednesday January 31st the House of Representatives convened to bestow a great honor to former U.S. Senator and Governor Zell Miller, with the passage of House Resolution 16. This resolution which was introduced by Representative Ben Bridges, urged the House to allow a statue of Governor Miller to be placed on Capitol grounds. Minority Leader Dubose Porter, Representative Mickey Channell, Representative Charles Jenkins all supported the resolution. Along with honoring the former governor, House passed Bill 98 and House resolution 46, both introduced by Representative Barry Fleming. These actions would put into statute changes made to the rules of the House which had been adopted at the beginning of the 2007 session.
On Thursday, the House of Representatives Speaker Pro Tempore Mark Burkhalter announced that the bankruptcy creditors of Delta had voted to reject the U.S. Airways offer to over take the Atlanta based company. With the withdrawal of the U.S. Airways $ 10 billion merger, Georgia jobs have been saved. House Resolution 21, which would commemorate Mr. Elbert Shaw Jr. by renaming the Dalton Regional youth detention center to Elbert Shaw Jr. Regional Youth Detention Center, and this resolution was even requested by its own detention center staff.
Finishing up the week on Friday, three bills received votes on the House floor. House bill 81, introduced by Representative Cecily Hill, is responsible for lowering the fees required for Salt water fishing, charter guides and pier fishing licenses, as well as increasing the license fees for
out of state residents. House bill 105, introduced by Representative Gene Maddox, makes changes to provisions relating to poultry, rendering plant licenses, fees, poultry dealers, brokers, and market operator license requirements. Ultimately eliminating unnecessary fees adopted in the 1950's which have become inadequate. Representative Jill Chambers presented House bill 39, which clarifies the requirements for obtaining public records, specifically pertaining to federal statute or regulation, which are intended to be kept confidential. All bills have now been sent to the Senate
