This week, the General Assembly was officially in recess. Monday, the Capitol was closed in remembrance of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday. On Tuesday and Wednesday, the House and Senate Appropriations Committees held joint 2005 Budget Briefings. The House will reconvene on January 24 at 1:00pm for its next legislative day.
On Tuesday, the joint Appropriations Committees met at 10:00am where they heard from Governor Sonny Perdue and presentations from various state agencies, policy analysts, and revenue experts. The Members heard from Commissioner Bart Graham of the Department of Revenue, and David Sjoquist, of the Andrew Young School of Policy Studies at GSU, on the economic outlook and revenue estimations for the State of Georgia. State Superintendent of Schools, Kathy Cox, briefed the Members on the educational needs of the state.
Before concluding Tuesday's session of briefings the Members heard presentations from both Tim Burgess, Commissioner of the Department of Community Health, and B.J. Walker, Commissioner of the Department of Human Resources about their budget recommendations.
On Wednesday, the joint session began with a presentation from the University System of Georgia and the Department of Technical and Adult Education. The Commissioner of Georgia's Department of Transportation, Mike Vollmer, and many other directors of the state's transportation agencies addressed the session.
Ending the session, the Members heard budget recommendations and presentations from the Department of Corrections, Juvenile Justice, Pardons and Paroles, Public Safety, and the Court System.
Rep. Ben Harbin (R-Evans), Chairman of the House Appropriations Committee, said, "This year's Budget Hearings was a more efficient process than we've seen in the past. We were able to get the job done in two days, rather than taking two weeks as in years past."
"I am pleased with the budget, and I believe that the General Assembly is ready to work going into this new session," said Chairman Harbin.
The House will reconvene on January 24 at 1:00pm for its next legislative day.
